Description: From the name you've probably guessed that this is a former state run hotel. It's sturdy looking but unexceptional from the outside but a look inside shows traces of faded grandeur. Push open the massive metal doors and prepare to be charmed...
Crumbling plaster and broken bannisters sit alongside the remains a a once impressive mural and from the ceiling hangs a stylish and rather opulent chandelier.
The staff speak little English but from their bleak little cell they will make you feel welcome. So far it seems only one floor has been renovated and we could see no signs of work carrying on. The receptionist took us to the first floor where there is a massive landing and a teeny bar in the corner; it didn't look like it gets used much.
Next to it was Room 1 - our room. Laminate floor, voile curtains, new furnishings and a swish new en suite bathroom - with bath and shower! With it's own water heater! Yes you have to switch it on and it takes a while to get a full tank but for Georgia this is good accommodation at a low price - about £14 for a double room.
Our room overlooked the main square and had two tiny balconies - each big enough for one person to sit out on.
The room was comfortable and quiet. Soft furnishings were brand new and immaculate - this place even had a planned colour scheme! Beware of the wheely pouffe, which flies alarmingly across the room when you sit on it!
No breakfast included but the hotel does have a restaurant adjoining it. Ideal location for the Stalin Museum - literally thirty seconds walk across the square and near shops, cafes, and an ATM.
A great choice and very memorable.
