Where you stay depends on what you want to do. For creole music and other night life, stay in Roseau or Portsmouth. The Fort Young, in Roseau, appeared to be the best of the city locations.
For nature hikes and bird-watching, choose an inland hotel. The Floral Gardens, on the cross-island road from Melville Hall Airport to the Central Rainforest Preserve, was a very atractive small hotel resort in a river valley enhanced with a lovingly-cultivated tropical flower garden.
For swimming and just lazing on the beach, choose a non-city location on the Caribbean side of the island. I picked the Sunset Bay Club, a small family-owned resort on Batalie Bay, Their all-inclusive rate of $118/night --- which included superb meals and a open bar --- went down to $100 after a ‘buy six nights get one free’ promotion. No nightlife here, but it’s hard to beat for sheer get-away-from-it-all relaxation. There are attractive hiking trails nearby, and the resident fisherman will be happy to take you out with him while he collects the evening’s supper.
