Description: This complex of self-catering houses and apartments is used for housing for students in the nearby Sligo Institute but it was designed to be dual-purpose with the aim of renting out holiday accommodation during the summer. It has to be said this is a large site, but it is out of the town, on the main road towards Enniskillen, about a 30 minute walk into the centre of the town. There are not many shops nearby either, and so this probably only makes sense if you have a car.
Between us all we booked a house and an apartment - there was no problem getting parked right outside the apartment but parking space close to the house was more of an issue.
The house was reasonable enough with one ensuite room and then 2 other bathrooms and four single bedrooms, and a large kitchen and also a living room. The apartment was probably more pleasant with a twin room and a single room both ensuite, then a large kitchen-living area. Given there were six of us staying in the house, the saucepans were rather on the small side, and other cooking utensils were rare, so don't plan on cooking any great meals. Also, the cleanliness of the kitchen left something to be desired, and much of the crockery was chipped. The bathrooms were fine apart from the damp patches on the walls.
You could quite easily tell that these apartments and houses are primarily student accommodation. The large numbers of apartments and houses mean all appear quite similar inside, with dull industrial carpets and built in student bedroom furniture, and not really any sense of luxury or hominess but rather feel standardised. The houses are not only rented out as wholes but also as renting out by rooms, with each room having a separate electronic keycard. The main office at the entrance to the sight can be quite helpful in finding out information about the area and quite a few information leaflets.
There are a lot of options of places to stay in and close to Sligo, maybe in more pleasant locations. The size of this site means that you do however stand a good chance of finding a self-catering apartment for a week during the summer, but the number of houses are more limited. Do be prepared to give the kitchen a bit of a clean though, and if there are quite a number of you it may be worth bring a large saucepan and dishes to go in the oven. Having stayed in quite a few other self-catering holiday houses, this place is simply unexciting and feels mass-produced, the interiors feel somewhat grimey and worn. Its probably worth looking at other options first, and this place should be well down your list.
