Description: On the way home from Quebec we decided to take a different route. We came down along Lake Champlain. Shelburne Vermont has plenty of accommodation options. I was looking for something small and friendly. The Elliot House seemed to fit the bill perfectly. At $100 a night for B&B the price was a selling factor as well.
Anne was waiting for us when we arrived and she took us on a tour of the house. The dining area where breakfast is served between 8am and 9am, the parlor where there is a communal TV and the library where you are welcome to read any of the books.
The three bedrooms are upstairs. We were shown to the room called Charming. All of the rooms are quite similar. The only difference was that Charming was not ensuite, it has a private bathroom but not in the room. I was a little upset when I saw that our room was the one that was not ensuite, that was not what I had booked. Someone with more clout was sleeping in my room.
Charming has two beds, a queen and a single. It has pink and green floral wallpaper, which is why I hadn’t chosen this one, not my favorite color combination. The bed is very comfortable though with a matelasse coverlet and a quilt folded at the foot. There is a green wingback chair and a lovely (either tiger maple or flame maple) dresser in the empire style. There was one nightstand unfortunately on Al’s side of the bed and two other lamps in the room.
It was quite warm and there is no air conditioning so we used the ceiling fan to keep the room comfortable. I asked about WIFI and it is available just not in our bedroom. I was able to go to the dining room and use my laptop quite easily.
There is a swimming pool in the yard which we did not use. Our room had three large windows that look out on to the front of the house. I was disappointed not to have down or feather pillows but that is just a personal preference. I did however love the bowl of different chocolates on the dresser, a very nice touch.
We had a screen in the hall outside our room that we could put up to give us a little privacy if we had to get up to use the bathroom during the night. Our bathroom had a tub with shower and a pedestal sink. There were plenty of very plush towels for us to use. A note in the room requests that we try to conserve and if staying multiple days the sheets and towels will be replaced every three days unless requested otherwise.
Breakfast is served right off the kitchen. They have a menu so you have choices. The choices are posted on a blackboard in the kitchen. There was just about anything that you could want for breakfast.
You can begin with orange juice and/or fresh fruit, followed by fresh baked muffins. On the day we were there it was blueberry. Granola, yogurt and toast are available. For your entree you can choose an omelet with a variety of fillings, eggs any style or Belgian waffles with bananas and/or pecans. With real Vermont syrup and plenty of good fresh coffee you will never leave the dining room hungry.
The hosts are friendly and they will happily give any help you may require. This is a warm and comfortable place to stay and also very well located. They are out of the hustle and bustle but a short drive gets you right into Shelburne. Don’t trust your GPS to find this one however, ours took us to an empty field down the road.
