Fantastic Resort and Snorkeling

We took the Aremiti ferry and everything went smoothly. We were then transferred to the Hilton. We had a superior garden bungalow, #45. It was a single freestanding bungalow, the third row back from the beach, and you could see the beach from our balcony through the foliage. The room was large with a very comfortable bed, couch, chair and large bathroom with a clawfoot tub. The air conditioning worked well. There was also a large covered balcony with a table and 2 chairs. But the beach, water and snorkeling were the main reasons we choose this hotel and they did not disappoint! I had never seen water like that before. The Caribbean water has nothing on French Polynesia’s! The snorkeling was amazing. It was nice that it was such shallow water snorkeling and there was a lot close to shore. We thought the best snorkeling was to the right of the overwater bungalows (when facing the beach). There was a lot of live, colorful coral, many fish I had never seen before, and even the occasional stingray. With it being such a shallow reef, it was easy for me to take some nice underwater photos. I could have snorkeled here for hours and hours—too bad we only had 2 nights here. We did spend most of our time on the resort in the water though! On our first day we ate lunch at the restaurant- I had a chicken Panini and my husband had poisson cru and a tuna and papaya chutney sandwich. All was very good—but it was way too much food. We should have just split an entrée. That evening we went to Le Mahagony for dinner. They picked us up from the hotel. I had the mahi mahi and my husband had duck- both were great and I would recommend this restaurant. When we got back to our room they had left us cookies and champagne in celebration of our anniversary. The next morning we had breakfast in the restaurant—we did not want the buffet—it was expensive and I can’t eat enough to justify it. We ordered al a carte and even those were large portions! I had an omelette and my husband had French toast- both were good, but nothing special. Today we went on a 4x4 tour in the morning and snorkeled in the afternoon. That night we had dinner at the crepe bar at the hotel. The dinner crepes were just ok, but the chocolate dessert crepe was delicious. That evening when we went back to our bungalow, we received a letter from the hotel saying that we didn’t have to check out until 2:15—that was great since we had to be ready for our transfer at 3 pm. We thought they had just given us a late check out. So the next day we ordered another al a carte breakfast and then spent our time on the beach and snorkeled. It rained a bit that morning, so my husband borrowed an umbrella from the front desk. When we were done at the beach we showered and packed up. We then went to have a quick lunch at the restaurant before checking out. I went and got us a table while my husband went to return the umbrella. He took forever, and I was wondering what was taking so long. When he finally came to the restaurant, he said that the front desk had been calling us about check out—we were supposed to check out at 11, and they didn’t believe my husband when he said we got a letter saying our check out was at 2:15! So he had to go back to the room to get the letter and prove it to her! Turns out it was a typo. Oh well, it was nice having the extra time in the room! Lunch ended up taking forever, but we made it just in time for our transfer to the ferry back to Tahiti.
