A Hostel

The cheapest hostel in town is always likely to attract a mixed and varied bag of guests. In my ten-bed dorm there was an Irishman, a Chinese-Australian and two twentysomething French girls. A middle-aged German woman on her way back from Uzbekistan hogged the only internet connection. The previous night a Lithuanian man had stayed in bed for sixteen hours with a bad cough and a bottle of vodka.

An outfielder's throw from the bus and train stations and within easy walking distance of the Old Town, it's not only the price that attracts people to the A Hostel. There are a mixture of rooms, from private singles to bunk bed dorms, but the cheapest beds are in the Japanese-style capsule dorms, which has sleeping compartments arranged in double-tiered pods along a single wall. It's not quite Tokyo - there are no doors or curtains at the bottom of the bed to complete the coffin effect and no private TV set at your feet - but the beds are large and comfortable, there's enough space to sit up in, and the arrangement gives a surprising amount of privacy should you wish to retire early with a bottle of spirits. Bedding is provided free of charge (you'll need to provide your own towels and breakfast) and there are lockers at the foot of each bed. While the hostel was more or less full on the Saturday night I stayed, it was also very quiet at night, with no curfew or traffic noise from outside.

Despite the mixed guidebook reviews, the staff were friendly enough (though this is one hostel where you will need to print out your booking confirmation form) and the facilities above standard for the price. The communal seating area has table football and a large screen TV, and the kitchen is equipped with a coffee maker and microwave in addition to the usual amenities. A couple more showers would have been nice - the only two are unhelpfully located inside the two toilets meaning double queues in the morning, but the rooms are clean and there's round-the-clock hot water.

Overall, while the A Hostel feels a little too institutional to spend more than a couple of nights in, it's a great place for a one or two night stay. Cheap, well-located and full of travellers, it's a place where you're sure to meet people.
