Description: This slightly down at heel but perfectly adequate hotel is used mainly by visiting British coach parties that keep it busy even during the off season. However, you may be able to get a room if you have turned up in town without a reservation and are struggling.
It's at the western end of the village, a few minutes walk from the main part and opposite the pleasure boat moorings. In the other direction its a ten minute walk to the ferry crossing that takes you ove the water to Boppard.
It's a family run hotel and the staff are all friendly and speak good English. There are rooms in the main building and more in the small annexe beside the convent church Augustin St Marys. The bells ring all night through so if you are a light sleeper request a room on the other side of the hotel. Unfortunately the train line runs nearby and big lorries careeer through the town 24 hours a day so there aren't any truly quiet rooms.
If you have mobility problems do ask for a ground floor room. The staircases are very narrow and steep and there is no lift. If you have a large case you're going to have fun trying to get it up the stairs!
The rooms can only be described as adequate. They are clean and when we stayed in winter the place was wonderfully warm. All rooms are en suite and the bathrooms are small and the decor dated but they are in good repair and have everything you need including a hairdrier. Furniture consisted of a bed, two chairs, a table and a wardrobe. Everything was in decent condition if cheap and unmatching. Bedrooms here don't have televisions since they prefer coach party guests to be spending money in the bar rather than sitting in their rooms.
Dinner is served in the main hall and if you are with a group it'll be at long tables in a line so you have to get on with your fellow guests. Maybe if you stay independently you can have a separate table. If you stay as part of a group there is no choice - one dish only and the quality is poor. Tinned vegetables and rehydrated mashed potatoes! Better to eat somewhere in the village!
Breakfast was a distinctly underwhelming Continental affair and there wasn't enough. Do your self a favour and stock up on fruit or ceral bars at the ALDI a few doors down the road.
In the evenings you can amuse yourself in the hotel's Weinstube (a traditional Rhineish drinking hole) and sample some local wines. Or you can venture into the cellar bar which while it is certainly housed in a cellar is overdecorated to the point of kitsch and surely not intentionally naff? Nevermind, the old dears on our trip seemed to like it because the alcohol is cheap and the entertainment is considered by those who regularly go on coach trips to be very good. I can't comment - we took the train to a bigger town for the evening instead!
As long as you don't expect too much this hotel won't disappoint. It's in a good location and can present a cheap option.
