City Guesthouse

Handily placed right on the southern edge of the Old Town, within a couple of minutes' walk of some of Tallinn's liveliest pubs and the Town Hall Square, City Guesthouse is a good choice if you value budget and location over comfort and facilities.

There's nothing very special about the place. The rooms are spacious, the beds comfortable and the carpets have recently seen a vacuum cleaner, but the facilities are no more than you'd expect for the price: a couple of wardrobes, radiators set on luke warm, free towels and bedding, a courtyard view and a mirror above the bed. At either end of the corridor, two showers and two toilets were shared between the ten rooms on the floor. The showers were warm, the toilets had paper as long as you remembered to ask.

The hostel's forty rooms are split over three floors and range from four bed dorms to a few private double en-suites. Most of the rooms, though, have shared facilities, including the small breakfast area on the fourth floor. Included in the price, breakfast is a no-frills choice of porridge, cold meat and cheese, hard boiled eggs and bread, laid out buffet style in a gloomy room opposite reception. If you can, bag the one table with a window view, looking out across the street on the Estonian Drama Theatre.

Although there's a small lift in the entrance, you'll need to navigate the stone staircase up from street level first. The receptionists were helpful and spoke excellent English but the overall feel of the hostel was slightly institutional with not a great deal of information on display and no communal areas, breakfast room aside, to meet fellow travellers. Overall, while the City Guesthouse is one of the cheapest places in town, there's no curfew and you get WiFi in reception, if you want any more than a bed for the night and the minimum of facilities, pay the extra and try somewhere else.
