Oasis Palm Beach, Cancun - A Value-conscious Family Choice

The Oasis Palm Beach successfully walks the fine line between being family-friendly in terms of cost and ambiance without being cheap and kid-dominated to the point of alienating other types of guests. Best features for families include a wide array of food choices in the buffet-type restaurants, a shallow swimming area beachside and an outstanding, large free-form pool with good areas for people of all ages to enjoy the water.

We found the service people to be better than average in terms of being friendly and welcoming. The property is very well-maintained -- from housekeeping in the guest rooms to all common areas and the pool. We tried the Mexican Gourmet "reservations-only" restaurant on the property one evening and found the service and cuisine to be well worth the trouble.

There are activities including artists and live music, along with an exercise class in the pool and a kids program.

Aspects we would point out to those interested are that while room air conditioning is definitely up to capacity, there are common areas of the hotel where it is spotty. This may have to do with the difficulty of efficiently dealing with thousands of door openings, etc. Room windows are sealed, so they can't be opened. We understand why properties do this because of energy efficiency concerns, but we find it a drawback, too. Room furnishings and fixtures are relatively basic, but in good repair.

Elevator capacity can be at the limit at busy times with three lifts serving a property of this size. The pool opens at 8 a.m. and closes at 8 p.m., which can be a little shorter window than some might like (but on the bright side, this is not a property that suffers from the loud, late-night pool parties that you can find at other places.) Although drinks are included in the package, we didn't see anyone overdoing this aspect to the point of being annoying, as we have sometimes seen at other properties.

Overall, we found the Oasis Palm Beach to be a tremendous value for the price that we paid and we would especially recommend it to value-conscious travelers and families.
