Lux 11

One very important thing to note about Lux 11 upfront is that you shouldn't plan on sharing a room with travel partner with whom you're not entirely comfortable or perhaps even intimate. I say this because at Lux 11, form defeats function, and the shower and bathroom sink is basically located in the same room as the bed. And while a floor to ceiling mirror in front of the shower does provide some privacy, the mirror leaves plenty of space with which to sneak a peak at your bathing roommate.

That said, this is a really cool, comfortable and reasonably-priced hotel. (For the best price, I'd recommend booking through the Design Hotels website). Also, this hotel is a great place to spend a week in Berlin because all rooms feature a modest, but well-designed kitchenette complete with a pots and pans, a range oven, and a dishwasher. The rooms themselves are fairly stark and modern—perfect if you like that sort of design, but perhaps a little cold if your tastes trend more towards four-poster beds. Our room had a great set of bay windows, one of which provided a great close-up view of the iconic Berlin Fernsehturm. Quite a few rooms also appeared to have balconies, so it's worth asking about balcony availability as well.

The building itself has a fairly interesting history being located in the former East Berlin. It's a little odd to think that such a hip and decidedly capitalist hotel once housed East German soldiers and reportedly a banana warehouse. Whatever it once was, though, it's an impressive structure now, spanning almost an entire block and painted a gleaming white.

One last thing to note, Lux 11 is considered an apartment hotel, meaning that they cater to low maintenance guests. Don't, for example, expect room service for a freshly made bed each morning. One of the reasons good prices can be had is that they only offer mid service every three days.
