Canto De Nelli

My stay at this B&B was a bit of a mixed bag. When we arrived there was no-one there, the contact phone number did not work, and we ended up sitting outside the door for two hours waiting, when in desperation we went to the tourist office, and managed to get in touch with the lady who runs the B&B. Once we managed to ring her, ahe appeared a few minutes later to let us in. Though this seems to have been a simple mix up, what impressed us less was that none of the rooms we had boked were ready for us - at nearly 7pm - they had been cleaned from the previous guests nor made up ready for us.

First thing to note is that the B&B is on the second floor and there is no lift, but quite a steep stone staircase. So this is not a great option if you have alot of luggage or would struggle to climb the stairs. Even with a small case, I found this a quite a scramble up the stair

However, the rooms were lovely, clean and nicely decorated, each with white walls and bed linen and then an accent colour with rugs and cushions - the rugs were great on the tiled floor as it was quite cool at night. Given it is in a restored old building, the rooms vary in size, but are much larger than most standard hotel rooms in the city. They were also very clean and tidy, with fresh towels each day. We also had a lovely view out of the window over San Lorenzo.

Breakfast was around a large communal dining table, with a small buffet breakfast of bread, cereal, jam, ham and cake, and then tea or coffee or cappucino. It may not have had the selection of a larger hotel buffet, but it was more than adequate, with no lack of food. The Iranian lady who runs the B&B, made us breakfast each morning, and although not the warmest host in the world, was pleasant and could be quite chatty at times.

The major detractor to this B&B was its location at the market at San Lorenzo, which made it very centrally located to all the sights, but was also very noisy. The market started to be set up from 5.30am, so there was banging as stalls were reconstructed. Then the market runs all day well into the evening, and then are taken down, then move in street cleaners and bin lorries which keep going until about 1am. The rooms with single glazed windows and shutters, can therefore be extremely noisy. Although I live on a busy road in a city, the noise here did keep me awake at night, and so I only got a few hours sleep each night, which left me feeling very tired and drained. At the same time, this is also a family home, with the owner and her son living her, and so she seems to be less than impressed if you return during the afternoon, so it made it difficult to go for a cat nap even. So unless you can sleep through anything, don't mind wearing earplugs or only sleep for a few hours anyway, this place is probably not all that conducive to sleep and rest.

Its location does make it very centrally located, and a few minutes walk from most of the sights in the city, as well as very close to the train and bus station. There are several restuarants and cafes close by as well - of varying quality!

Despite this place being comfortable and clean, and a pleasant host, I am not sure I would recommend to stay here, as I certainly wouldn't stay here again, mainly because of the noise levels from the market which did detract from my whole stay in Florence.
