While this is newer than the Palau Pacific Resort, it doesn’t seem to have the same resort atmosphere. Nevertheless, it is a fine hotel operated by Japans Nikko Hotels in partnership with Le Meridien.

The 158 rooms are contained in a six-storey block. Each room has a view towards water but the building itself could be from almost any city in the world. The rooms themselves are well fitted with everything you need on a short vacation.

When I was in Palau recently, the hotel celebrated its third anniversary by opening a new beach. This has had a dramatic effect on the outdoor options. The beach is made of soft white sand and the water is clear. As part of the beach there is an offshore island connected by a small bridge and the whole area has been netted to improve safety. You can swim, paddle in a canoe or just lie on the sand with a drink from the beach bar. The beach is close to the large pool so there is a real water playground now available to guests. Also nearby is a wharf where diving and snorkelling tours depart from so it really is water central.

One of the highlights for guests is the feeding of the fish and turtles in the large pool which winds around the pavilions by the entrance. The Japanese in particular seem to be fascinated by this and I must say that my wife and I spent 15 minutes watching one day.

Elsewhere the resort has a large restaurant which has nice views over the water towards one of Palau’s dramatic rock islands. The food ranges from Japanese favourites to international cuisine and the restaurant is open to the public.

In keeping with modern trends, the resort has a spa and a range of treatments. A new development is the short ‘Bali" massages that are being offered in one of the open-air pavilions by the fish pool. I assume that the hope is these will lead to guests taking a full treatment.

If you need activities away from the water, the resort has a tennis court, a putter golf course, a games room and a gymnasium. There is also a shop selling souvenirs and a range of paintings. If you need to get outside the resort, it is possible to walk to several small restaurants a couple of KTV bars and a minimart. Palau is very safe so you can do this day or night.
