Hotel Central

A dirty square on the edge of the Medina, tramps sleeping on benches, harbour cranes and the smell of stagnant water. But despite the inauspicious exterior, the Hotel Central is a sound budget choice for visitors to Casablanca.

For starters, there's the friendly staff. And then the brightly painted rooms, loud electric blue, yellow and orange (I half expected to see Van Gogh leap out of the rickety wardrobe) with balconies that offer just a peek at the sea and the Hassan II Mosque (a 25-minute walk away). The location isn't great but isn't bad either: on the same square as the main youth hostel, ten minutes on foot to Casa Port station and trains to Rabat, fifteen to where the action is on the other side of the Medina. Light sleepers might get woken by the call to prayer, but there isn't much noise from the streets outside other than hoses being turned on in the morning to clean the dusty square.

Aside from the brightness, the rooms are big and well-equipped. All day hot water, clean bathrooms (although our shower was prone to flooding if left on for more than a few minutes at a time), and large, comfortable beds. Down below reception there are six or seven PCs hooked up to the Internet for free. Breakfast, served with windows open to the square between the guest-friendly hours of 7 and 11am, is more than decent: baskets of cut-up baguette with butter and apricot jam, coffee, squeezed orange juice and hot crepes. Like the staff, the clientele is predominantly young - a few families but mainly twenty-something and a mixture of Asian and European, male and female. It's a good place to meet people and to base yourself for a few days if you're going to be spending most of your time outdoors and don't absolutely need to be dead-centre to all the action. Best of all, it's cheap.
