A Perfect Stay

Slovenia has a small sun kissed coastline on the Adriatic Sea between Italy and Croatia and on one particular headland, there are about four or five small medieval fishing villages. We stayed in one of them - Izola - and our holiday was complete when we chose the Hotel Marina.
The harbour in Izola stretches the length of the village and ends up in a "spur" with the hotel nestled in the centre of this stunning setting. The immediate location of the hotel is perfect as it overlooks this harbour with it's flotilla of small fishing and leisure boats and is fronted by a beautiful open terraced restaurant / bar where one can take one's leisurely breakfast in the morning or sample a beautiful lunch or dinner later on, or just sit and have a coffee. The reception / foyer is perhaps on the small side but this enhances its intimacy and with the genuine friendliness of all the staff it all adds up to a real family atmosphere.
We had a corner room number 108 on the first floor. It was air-conditioned with a large bed, two seater couch, flat screen T.V., a bathroom with toilet, bath and shower, and it opened out on to a large tiled balcony, approx. 16 ½ half feet by 14 ½ feet, with two sun loungers, two chairs, a table and a large plant – all without the feeling of being cramped.
Being a corner balcony, it overlooked the small square with a couple of restaurants and also the harbour which was so close you could have tossed a coin into it – if you were that way inclined! Some nights we retired here after dinner to soak up the warm sea breeze and the nightlife of the square, all the while the little boats lit up the waterfront with lights twinkling on the headland opposite. With the two whirlpools being free for guests and the massages being very cheap, all in all it was our own piece of heaven.
Although the town of Izola wasn’t very big the narrow streets were a pleasure to ramble through – right up to the small church with its many relics and some fine old books dating back to the 16th century. There are numerous restaurants here and every Saturday night there is an inexpensive barbeque on the harbour and although we didn’t avail of one, there are some fishing boats that take you out to fish and then have a party upon return when your catch can be eaten. Also, we were able to explore some of the other beautiful towns on the headland, Piron, Koper and Portoroz using the frequent and cheap public buses.
We certainly intend to return to the Hotel Marina some day and would recommend it to anyone who would like a purely relaxing holiday in a beautiful location.
