Just a few hundred metres from Chesters Fort, slap bang on the line of the Hadrian's Wall National Trail, Riverside Campsite makes an excellent base for anyone wanting to explore the most popular sections of the UNESCO-listed Wall.
With a camping space the size of half a football pitch and a policy of only accepting those hiking around the Wall, you'll hardly be pushed for space here. On the two nights we stayed (a Bank Holiday weekend at the end of August) there were only five other people on the whole site. It's a remarkably peaceful place in other respects, too: the North Tyne burbles by just a few dozen steps from the edge of the campsite and the adjacent B6318 (handy for the Hadrian's Wall bus, which stops right outside Chesters Fort) is never very busy.
For the price (£5 per person per night plus £3 if you come by car) the facilities are extremely impressive. The grass was well-cut and there's a brand-new shower and toilet block at one end of the field with free hot showers, a washing-up area and seating inside and out. The friendly owners run a walkers' cafe at the campsite entrance and there's a pub directly across the road. If you prefer to bring your own provisions, Hexham - where you'll find a 24-hour Tesco's supermarket - is only six miles away.
But it's the location that really makes the campsite. A few minutes' walk in one direction brings you to Chesters Fort; over the river in the other and you can wander the remains of the original Roman bridge; Brunton Turret and Planetrees are both less than a mile away to the east; west is a 13-mile hike to Once Brewed, passing Sewingshields, Broomlea Lough, Housesteads and Sycamore Gap. And Chollerford isn't just an ideal stopover for people wanting to walk the Wall - there are a number of short hikes around the surrounding countryside taking in trout rivers, traditional pubs and haunted castles.
