West Plaza By the Sea

West Plaza By the Sea

This is one of five West Plaza hotels in Koror so you need to remember By the Sea. It is a place I enjoy. This is not a resort and is not a 4-5 star hotel. It is more motel-style but the rooms are adequate and the restaurant is excellent.

By the Sea says it caters equally to business people and tourists. That seems to be true. Some visiting business people regularly stay here and you also see some small groups and some individual tourists from Australia, Guam, Japan and Korea.
The hotel has 36 rooms which are standard or deluxe class. If you are getting a standard room I suggest those on the third floor and larger than some of those on the second floor. The deluxe rooms have a kitchenette which would be useful for longer stays. The rooms are airconditioned with individual units, there is TV, telephone, electric water heater and a refrigerator. Most rooms have a desk, and a lounge or two lounge chairs. Most people will find them completely adequate.

The hotel is built right on the street so there is a little traffic noise at times but the road past the door is a cul-de-sac so traffic is light. There are water views from most rooms. The back of the hotel is right on the water and the Red Rooster restaurant takes advantage of that by having a nice outdoor seating area which is great for breakfast, lunch, or dinner and even for an afternoon drink. Food at the restaurant is primarily Japanese style although Western meals are also available. The price level is very reasonable (mains from $7.00) and the quality is excellent. It is a place that I always enjoy.

The company that owns this hotel also owns several other businesses in Palau. One is a brewery. Naturally the company brew is available here and if you wish you can have a sampling of each of the four brews that are made. The sample is small but is large enough to indicate that each style has its own distinctive taste. There is light, pale, amber and dark. My personal choice is amber and you can get a medium draft for $2.50 or a large glass for $3.50. This compares with a standard imported can from Japan or the U.S. at about $3.00.

The hotel has a few other facilities. Ice is available from a machine, drinks can be obtained from a refrigerator in the lobby and a laundry service is offered. The TV only has four channels but you can order a video from a small collection, which be played when you wish to watch on a special TV channel. There is a rental car office next to the lobby.

Outside there are several restaurants close by and about half a dozen within easy walking distance. There is a very basic take-out service opposite the hotel, a hair dresser and a minimart about 50 meters away. Night owls will find a couple of bars/KTV places not far away.

Other hotels in the group are in different parts of the town. The 20-room Downtowner is as described, the Desekel is also downtown but off the main road, the Malakal is located on the island of Malakal near bars, discos and dive centres while the Coral Reef is a bit isolated out past the By the Sea. The Palm Bar Bistro is also part of the group. This serves Pacific Rim cuisine (Asian, islander and Western) and is home to the locally brewed Red Rooster draft beer.
