Barefoot Cay in Roatan, Honduras, Great, Great Stay!

What a stay at the Barefoot! I will share many details but in summary, the staff was off the chart friendly and helpful, the food was some of the best I have ever had (I live in San Francisco and eat out all of the time), and the accommodations were great. The details by category:

The Food: You can eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner at any time during the day but there was a preset dinner every night at 7pm. Those that didn’t want to socialize didn’t and those that did, ended up most nights having additional drinks by the pool post dinner. Most importantly, the food, every bite, every meal, was great and a few of the meals were incredible.

Diving: Most everyone staying at the Barefoot was there for the diving and went out 2-3 times a day. It was the talk at dinner most nights and everyone loved the staff. I did my first dive and I had great confidence in the training I received. I will leave others to talk about diving but to have your own locker for your stay seemed first class.

Snorkeling: Right on the property is great area for snorkeling with two sunken ships within 50 feet. What is remarkable is that we didn’t have to pay for the gear, it was ours to use during our entire trip! If you went to any other venue (and we did for our last 3 nights), you have to pay by the hour and you felt pressure to get as much in as the hour allotted.

The Rooms: Great beds and great pillows which sounds minor but not for me. The air conditioner was quite which again sounds minor but not for me. It was quite between building and between rooms. TV was ok but they had Direct TV and a DVD player so that goes a very long way. Sadly, we did bring a computer and the internet was great. Again, no charge! Barefoot only have a few units so it was quite in general.

Staff: Great. They mention a standard tip is between 10-15%. We tipped 20%. Enough said.

What are the negatives? Barefoot is not walking distance to anything. Cabs were easy though as was renting a car. Barefoot faces South East and there was little to buffer the wind when it came. The West End was calmer but with that comes more bugs. There is no pristine beach but there was plenty of room for a lounge chair on the sand staring at the sea. Plus, the pool was right there. That is all I can think of.

I am not a huge traveler but my wife is. We both give it an A+

Need to Get Away???

Need to Get Away???

Our family of four (including two teenage daughters) spent 8 days at the Barefoot Cay Resort (June 21-29). We had previously stayed a week on the West Bay side. We stayed in the furthest 2 bedroom bungalow from the pool area.

If you are interested in ultimate privacy, acceptable isolation, luxurious accommodations and a genuine experience in a catered and pampered environment, look no further.

The proprietors, John and Milesse Kennedy run a very tight and upscale ship. The facilities are comfortable and kept very clean. The meals are excellent and ample. During the absence of certain staff the speed of service does take a hit. A sign of a good operation is when guests are asked for their feedback and their input is REALLY considered. John and Milesse are excellent listeners.

John and Milesse and their staff really try their best to make your stay as relaxed and enjoyable as possible. The bungalows offer every comfort that we would have expected. They are cared for and maintained as is best possible in such a trying environment. The kitchen is equipped with a coffee maker, microwave, refrigerator (our ice maker was on the fritz) pots and pans etc. If you needed something it would have been added in a second. Oh, as an example of total care, while our ice maker was out of service, we were provided ice on a daily basis. The living room opened up to the beach area and to an unparallel view. The bathroom and shower area was spacious and with ample numbers of towels and frills.

The pool is the central point for socializing among the guests as was the shaded area at the end of the private pier.

Across the cay is the Barefoot Divers operation. On the second story of the building are charming and well appointed 2 bedroom and 1 bedroom lofts.

The dive operation is staffed by a great crew lead by Marc. The air was sweet and fresh. The boat was powerful and comfortable. The best part was that most dive sites were just a short putt-putt away. The conditions were not as calm as on the West Bay beach side and the visibility was closer to 40 ft then to 60, but the plant life and fish life was superb. The diversity of the dives was also most enjoyable. The intent of the operation is to provide you with your best diving experience as part of their "valet" program. The program needs a little more work to polish up some rough ends but they are close. As every diver should remember, any promise made to you involves your life in the end of the equation so be responsible and check your gear before entering the water.

We had two dives filmed for posterity. I think that Marc might be looking to find an alternative videographer after our experience. It still was a worthwhile souvenir.

So if everything is so hunky dory would we go back again? If my kids could have their wish I should have booked for next year before we left.

There is one real issue that they are trying desperately to get a complete (mother nature always wins) handle on and that is the infestation of no-see-ums. Yes, they are there and yes, they get you when you let your guard down. Nothing works 100% but you learn fast and they do stop itching, eventually.

We salute John and Milesse for trying to provide a paradise for their weary guests. You succeeded for us! Thanks to all of you!

Barefoot Cay - Perfect place to stay in Roatan

Barefoot Cay - Perfect place to stay in Roatan

We stayed in Roatan for a week. Barefoot Cay was the ABSOLUTELY PERFECT choice for lodging, food, and service, plus access to whatever fit our mood, whether it was relaxation in a lovely tropical environment, or more active pursuits such as snorkeling, diving, or exploring the island of Roatan. There is much more to do there, by the way, than we ever imagined, and will have to go back in order to see more of the island. It's a very interesting place and I wish we had given ourselves more time to explore after our initial few days of decompression from our busy lives to the serenity of the cay and "island time."

The Barefoot Cay beach lodging is gorgeous and high-end. Very beautiful; also absolutely spotless. Food is sublime. Service is excellent. If you want to snorkel, dive, or kayak, the dive center is located discreetly on-site, and the valet diving service takes care of all the cleaning, lugging, etc. associated with diving, leaving us to simply enjoy the experience - which was phenomenal. The dive site considered to be the most famous and "must-see" dive destination on Roatan, Mary's Place, is just outside the reef that hugs Barefoot Cay.

With just 2 villas and 2 bungalows on the cay, everyone has privacy and it feels like you have your own caribbean home and piece of beach. We took a day trip to West End and while the beach itself is lovely we were apalled by the crowds, high-rise condos and hotels, traffic, noise, etc; came back to the cay realizing again how good we had it!

We'll be back and Barefoot Cay is the only place we'll stay.
Kudos to John and Milesse for creating such a wonderful private retreat
