Great Little Hotel

Great Little Hotel

I travel for a living and stay in hotels around the world two to three weeks out of each month and I was not disappointed in my stay at the Sallerhof. I was in Austria on vacation visiting my Austrian friend.

A couple of years ago the owners made a nice new addition to the hotel. The owner explained to me that it was necessary to add onto the original home because they are always "fully booked", so reserve well in advance. The rooms are compact and clean with lots of wood. The Sallerhof thought of everything in terms of comfort. The rooms even had anti-mosquito units to plug into the outlets in the bedroom. There is a "snack bar" i.e. vending machines in the lobby. This comes in very handy. There is a computer terminal to check e-mail. I was told this was "included" yet there was a 4 Euro charge on my bill for the usuage. I didn't complain though since I was so glad to have the convenience of the service. Breakfast is ample and served in a lovely dining room.

The #25 bus is convenient for getting into Salzburg. It took 30 minutes due to the stops, but the distance is not great. We drove our car into Salzburg one night to attend a Mozart dinner at the Abbey. I highly recommend this dinner and concert, not touristy. Parking was hard to come by and expensive.

Groedig is a charming little village and the Sallerhof is the place to stay.

Sallerhof Bed and Breakfast

Sallerhof Bed and Breakfast

Sallerhof is located in the last of the Austrian village of Grodig (just before Germany) and was one of the oldest farm there before it was converted into a bed and breakfast in 1963.

We were allocated to the new wing that has just underwent renovation a mere 3 months prior. The smell of new paint and polished wood was still distinct. Our room was fairly spacious with a good size bathroom and shower cubicle. It came with a balcony which has a partial view of the Untersberg. Unfortunately, it was either raining or too cold during most of our stay to enjoy the view from the balcony. Service was impeccable and the daily buffet breakfast served was sumptuous.

This award winning bed and breakfast is family run, the manager was extremely helpful to us. He gave us sound advice on where to go and NOT to go depending on the weather. Guests were allowed free internet use at the lobby (only 2 PCs) and reservations to various day tours can be booked through the manager. Communication was not an issue for us as most of the staff spoke excellent English. We had some reservations initially as the town was extremely quiet but our worries were unfounded as Sallerhof is centrally located with restaurants, grocery store and other amenities conveniently located within walking distance.

In all, we had an extremely pleasant stay here as the ambiance is homey and peaceful. I would not hesitate to stay here again even if commuting to Salzburg is not that convenient by public transport.

Go Here for online reservations. The manager patiently answered all our emails and inquiries as we could not decide on the type of package to book. We took his advice and decided to book a twin sharing room first. Just as well since the weather in Salzburg at the time of our visit became erratic.

To get there
A taxi from the train station costs about €15 and takes approximately 20 minutes depending on traffic conditions. Alternatively, you can take bus no. 25 (€1.80) and alight at the Dr-Richard-Hartmann-Strasse bus stop. You will need to back track and walk about 5 minutes to Sallerhof. There are clear signs on the main road indicating the location of Sallerhof.
