Red Lion Space

Located at the quiet end of Truong Son Street, the Red Lion Space is a new 8-room guesthouse with modern amenities and a friendly staff. My girlfriend and I spent almost 3 weeks at the Red Lion and couldn't imagine better accommodation for the price in Saigon.

Guest rooms (about $10 per night) are spacious and well-furnished with large beds, cable television with DVD, large mini-fridges, and wicker cafe tables and chairs. The bathroom was immaculate when we arrived, and, without having to ask, the staff frequently cleaned it while we were out. Free WiFi is available throughout the building.

The first-floor cafe is smartly designed and the kitchen specializes in delicious chicken dishes. Whether you choose an egg dish, pastries or Vietnamese-style noodles with seafood, breakfast is a cut above continental.

For true travelers, the District 10 location is no sweat -- it's a welcome alternative to overpriced downtown District 1 and the peddler-dense, tourist-saturated backpacker district near Pham Ngu Lau. The sights are a short motorbike or taxi ride away, and you'll be grateful for the peace and quiet the Lion affords you after a long day in chaotic Saigon. The swimming pool across the street is an added bonus.

For those planning an extended stay in Saigon, Red Lion is your best bet. Owners Lyon and Huyen helped us with everything from securing a 6-month visa to finding cheap, attractive furniture near the guesthouse. Monthly rates start at $350.
