Description: The Lake Nakuru Lodge came as day four on our safari journey and after a very long drive from the Maasai Mara on those same crummy roads I've previously mentioned in my review of the Mara Simba. That is somewhat unfortunate for the Lake Nakuru Lodge as I believe it had an effect on the overall perception and satisfaction here.
The lodge itself has a great location with a lovely view that afforded us zebras on more than one occasion. The rooms, however, were a bit dated and in needs of upgrades in bedding and linens. It also felt cramped, with the twin beds pushed together and little room on either side to navigate round them. I also found it a bit challenging with my large duffle bag given the limited amount of floor or table space to put stuff.
The grounds, however, more than made up for the "roughing it" feel here. They were well landscaped and provided a nice atmosphere when walking around. We did have a rather significant thunderstorm late in the afternoon that left things a bit on the humid, sticky side. I noticed that people were enjoying the swimming pool before and after the storm.
The quality and variety of food offerings here were a disappointment. Also served buffet style, I found it to lack flavor or substance. I was of course able to find something to eat at mealtime; I just wasn't impressed or wowed by anything they had to offer. Breakfast was especially disappointing. I think this may have been my first morning of opting for corn flakes and a hardboiled egg.
For me, this was just a stop along the way . . . a place to shower, get a light meal, lay my head down and move on. Not terrible by any stretch, just not memorable or special.
