Meridian Inn

I arrived at the Meridian Inn at 6pm. The rectangular shaped building was painted a light yellow and sat perpendicular to the street. There were about 12 rooms, each with a west-facing balcony. The area had other hotels around it; none higher than three floors. I went into the office and met Gordon, one of the owners. He gave me an overview of the hotel, the office hours, services, etc. Gordon showed me to my room, and explained a few things to me.

The room was nice. The walls were painted a beautiful shade of lime green and white tile floors. The striped bed sheets had shades of purple, blue, white, and lime green, matching the walls perfectly. The kitchen had a refrigerator, two burners, a sink, toaster, and microwave, dishes, pots and pans, and various other gadgets.

The bed was quite comfortable. I fell asleep quickly and the next morning, I awoke and sat up instantly – feeling as if half the day had gone by while I slept. With no clock in my room, I frantically searched for my watch. Finally, I found it, and noted it was barely 5AM. I fell back into a nervous sleep – wondering if I’d wake up at noon, cursing my lackadaisicalness. Needing not the cursing, I awoke at 8:30 am, feeling quite refreshed and not at all mad at myself. I turned the air conditioner off, and opened the windows as well as the door to my balcony. With a pack of Marlboros in one hand and a bunch of baby bananas in another, I sat down and enjoyed the morning.

Thirty minutes later, I started toward the beach. I had not seen it yet and was anxiously awaiting my first glimpse of paradise. I took a left out of the hotel, then walked about ten steps and saw a narrow path with a sign marked ‘beach’. I walked down it, turning 90 degrees and saw the beach. It was an absolutely breathtaking sight; turquoise water that you see in glossy magazines, baby powder fine sand; and best of all – no crowds. I walked onto the beach – found an empty chaise lounge chair and set myself up for a morning in paradise.

The Meridian Inn is located at the end of The Gap, so you don't hear too much of the music and noise. The staff is more than willing to assist you with any arrangements you may need. At the office, they sold items like suntan oil, beer, and snacks. There was also a healthy supply of books you could read. They do have "office hours", but there was a telephone to get hold of the owners in case of an emergency.

If you plan to see Barbados on a budget, I would definitely recommend the Meridian Inn - it's economical, safe, very clean, located right near one of the most beautiful beaches in Barbados, and the staff is very courteous and friendly.
