The attractive Burg-Hotel, one of the Relais du Silence, is located at the end of a quiet street parallel to and one block north of Hierengasse, Rothenburg’s most impressive street of old buildings. The hotel is at the end of the street where St Jacobs church, one block off the town square, is located. The 800 year old attractive half-timbered hotel building is built up against and on top of the city wall, overlooking the city and the Tauber Valley. Many rooms face the river and have good views from the cliff top of the river valley and of the ancient town wall. Other rooms overlook the garden of the former Dominican monastery next door. We had a room in the gable (the top floor) that overlooked the wall, river valley, and the old town itself, an excellent view.
Guests at the hotel can enter the monastery garden by the archway next to the hotel’s wall tower. The garden is bounded by the hotel, the ancient monastery, the towen wall, and a 14-century barn. This gateway also provides the most direct access to the Burggarten.
As befits one of the Relais du Silence, the Burg-Hotel was very quiet. Unfortunately it shares another trait of the Relais du Silence. It is expensive– $250-280 double, a nice breakfast included.
There is a parking garage which I think was incuded in the room price(not always the case in Europe, where parking charges are often steep).
The Burg-Hotel has no restaurant, but there are plenty of restaurants within a few blocks on and around the town square.
The Burg-Hotel is close to the center of action, the town square, but far enough away to avoid the noise and hustle and bustle of the tourist mobs.
Our room was large by European standards and very comfortable. The only negative I can think of about the Burg-Hotel was the price.
