Not a Delightful Stay

  • October 31, 2009

We spent a weekend there and were overwhelmed by how run down this old home had become since the 1997 photos that are on the website. upon arriving we could barely navigate the dark stone sidewalk that led to the house. You entered into a cluttered room that is an office. You are greeted by the owner then tour the rooms that are open to the public. The bedrooms are overcrowded with trinkets and run down furniture. Our bed's footboard was held up by a Asian chest. My husband had run into it as he squeezed by the wall and bed ( he is 6' and 180 lbs).
My shower had areas that were stained with past mildew and the water was luke warm. Thr breakfast was okay if you were not planning on eating meat.
There was plenty of coffee, and you were allowed free access to off brand sodas.
For the price, I guess by now you get that I was not impressed or delighted.

Pennsbury Inn B&B

Pennsbury Inn B&B

As usual I took a great deal of care choosing where we would be spending our nights while visiting the Brandywine Valley. There are plenty of B&Bs, Inns and many chain hotels. I was looking for what I felt would be a good fit for us. The Pennsbury Inn came out on top. I had planned to three nights at three different B&B’s but after several emails with Cheryl Grano the owner (with her husband Chip) I knew that I would be very happy to spend all three nights with them. I was reassured as soon as we were taken on a short and historic tour of the Inn that I had made a very good choice.

The Inn offers seven rooms, I chose the Daniel Webster Room, not their least expensive room but one of the more economical ones. It was a good sized room with a queen size brass bed, 4 chairs (one of which was upholstered), two round tables with pretty cloth covers as night stands, a marble top antique dressing table, a long wooden bench at the end of the bed, a pretty desk and a small TV.

Our bathroom was large with a huge shower and a pedestal sink. There was a closet in the bathroom which had extra linens, feather pillows and two terry robes.

I was ruing the fact that it was the warmest October in recorded history when I saw the fireplace insert in our room. It was way too warm to enjoy the fire.

The garden room, where guest can sit and relax has a beautiful fireplace made from stones taken from the ruined ice house on the property.

Turn down service is done while you are out having dinner. It involved not only turning down the bed but dropping off little dishes of blueberry buckle and having the cupboard opened to show the bottle of brandy. On the other days it was a brownie and some truffles.

In the dining room there is a side board where coffee, tea, hot chocolate, candy, cookies and snacks are offered. There are also soda and ice tea available as well as ice.

The grounds are 8 acres of gardens as well as horse shoes and a putting green. It is peaceful and beautifully landscaped with ponds and arbors and places to get lost for a short while.

Coffee and tea are available in the morning from 7:30am. Breakfast is served from 8:30. Breakfast includes cereal and juice on the side bar and then homemade breads and jams. Hot offerings included the choice of spinach or mushroom quiche, pancakes and bacon and artichoke soufflé. A menu is posted on the sideboard each morning.
Carol and Chip are very helpful hosts. They have plenty of information about the area available as well as menus from local restaurants. They are willing to give suggestions if you want them. They are friendly and helpful but never intrusive. We had a great visit.
