St. Leonard's
Description: My sister and I like to go somewhere a couple of times a year for a weekend away just the two of us without any children or partners for a girlie weekend and one of our favourite places to visit is Edinburgh as it is easy to get to and there is just so much to see and do there.
The last time we visited we ended up booking the Travelodge Central for our stay as it was really reasonable at only £45 per night for the both of us which is really cheap for Edinburgh and the location was really good. The hotel is located just off the Royal Mile so is easy to find and convenient for all the sights of the city.
Our room was just as we expected it to be which was pretty basic. You know when you are booking a Travelodge that the rooms aren’t going to be high spec and full of luxuries but as we planned on spending more time out of our room than in it this was fine by us. There were two beds which were comfortable but only one pillow each which I thought was a bit stingy. A kettle with a selection of teas and coffees was provided and the bathroom was adequate with a bath and a shower in it and enough towels to do us though I would have liked another couple. The one thing that I will say about the room was that it was spotlessly clean and also it was warm which after a long day of sightseeing in the cold and wind was much appreciated.
The problem I find with budget hotels like the Travelodge is that they get extremely noisy at the weekends and this particular one was no exception. The walls were pretty thin and we could hear our neighbours going about their business and on a night we were woken up several times by people arriving back after a night out being noisy in the corridors. This is something that you have to accept when paying these prices and we knew this was probably likely to be the case before we even booked the room.
The reception staff was friendly and helped us out a few times with directions etc. Breakfast wasn’t included in the room rate but we decided to pay for it rather than find somewhere else to eat. Breakfast cost £7.95 for a hot buffet breakfast and was pretty good value as you could help yourself to as much as you wanted. There was the usual items available such as bacon, sausage and eggs as well as lighter food such as yoghurts and fruit. It wasn’t the best quality but was edible and we filled up so much on breakfast that we ended up not even needing to eat any lunch while we were out.
At night the hotel also serves food and has a bar where you can have a drink either before hitting the town or as a nightcap before bed.
One thing that really did disappoint us about the hotel is the fact that they do not offer a left luggage facility which was really disappointing as we had hoped to leave our bags when we checked out so that we could spend our last few hours in the city without having to lug our luggage around with us. This actually would put us off staying at the hotel again as our train was hours after check out and we found it to be really inconvenient having to lug our cases around with us until then.
Overall this hotel is really good value for money. It was really clean and the bed was comfortable which was probably all we could expect for the money that we paid for it. It was noisy but we expected this and the only real disappointment was the fact that we couldn’t store our luggage at the hotel when we checked out.
