Albergo Pomezia

I had been walking around in Rome near the Musei Capitolini area looking for a place to stay. It was already 8:30pm and I had no idea where I was going to sleep that night. On the backstreet Via dei Chiavari, yet another hotel banner protruded from the right side buildings. It was getting late and I didn't have much money.

The surfaces in the lobby of the Albergo Pomezia were the colored of decade-old imitation teak, but were still intact and, on the whole, appeared well-maintained. It was a small room. The reception desk was immediately to the left as you entered, and there was something modest about the way the "receptionist’s" (there was only one person working there) desk because it was not very tall to lean on.
The service, or his service, was courteous and quick. He told me about a group from Holy Cross University who had been there while he performed a quick check-in.
I am not a seasoned over-nighter in Rome, but this room, in the middle of this city seemed capacious for what I paid (€70). A double bed with clean white linen was flanked by two nightstands. There was a wood chair and simple desk, the surface of which was nicked and banged and beat up probably from many years of student use. Though it was beat up, it was usable and even nice-looking. There was an ample closet, tall enough to hang three-quarter length jackets (which I didn’t need in the Roman summer), and had two drawers at the bottom.
The bathroom was clean and well lit. The facilities were surprisingly white. It was big enough for a single person to walk in, with a shower big enough to have two, or even three people in it at once.
A 15-inch flat screen TV faced the bed from the opposite wall, angled slightly downward towards the pillows on the far side of the room. CNN was the only English-speaking channel available. The room had an air-conditioner, and when I fell asleep with it on, I woke up very early in the morning, shivering outside of my covers. At that point, I shut it off, and opened the very large window to let in the milder night air.

The Albergo Pomezia was a lucky find. The staff (or, that guy) was quite inviting. Check-in and checkout were quick and simple. If you're on a budget, this is a place you can and should indulge in for a few nights.
