Nice Place to Unwind

  • October 29, 2009
  • Rated 4 of 5 by chic-adora from QC, Philippines
I went to Chema's 2 or 3 years ago and it was the perfect place for me to unwind. I had to go there to clear my head and that's what I got. Since they can only accommodate a few people the place was really quiet. I accompanied myself with a good book while waiting for the sun to set. Although I booked for a cabana overnight I felt safe even if the vines were the only curtains that I had. The owner Quincho was very accommodating. The staff are also nice. I hope to go back soon as I think they have expanded their resort. If you're looking for a quiet and private place in Davao / Samal this is the one!

Chema's By the Sea

Chema's By the Sea

Chema’s By The Sea is one of the resorts along the strip that face Davao City. It is a more high-end resort compared to Paradise Resort and Costa Marina. Chema’s boasts beautiful and well-planned landscaping which uses materials like dead coral and hardwood. The trellis that covers the walkway and the cabanas give a natural feel, especially with bougainvilla plants hanging over your head.

Reservations are necessary to get a hut or cottage in Chema’s, as walk-ins are not allowed. They limit the number of guests to ensure a sense of privacy for the patrons. Guests may choose to have a day trip or an overnight stay

Those who choose to stay overnight can either choose to use the cottage, cabanas, or tents. The cottage is twice as expensive as a cabana. It has a queen-sized bed with a comfortable mattress, an extra bay bed, its own bathroom, and a veranda. Presently, there is only one cottage available.

The cabana gives the guests a more natural feel of their surroundings. It is an open structure but is curtained with vines to separate the inside from the outside. There is a very large bed that can fit four to six comfortably, with a canopy to keep the mosquitoes away. Another bamboo bed is set outside, but whoever chooses to sleep there has to brave enough to face pesky insects. There is also a bamboo sala set to have chitchat over beer and chips. The tent costs as much as a cabana but can house more people. Ten people can stay in there comfortably. All sorts of lodging can make use of the huts by the beach and pool. For those who will take the day trip will have to pay for the use of the hut and two lounge chairs.

The boat fetches guests at the Waterfront Insular Hotel. Guests are not allowed to bring food or drinks. Only chips and water are allowed without corkage fee.

They have a restaurant which serves good food, but is a little steep. Servings are a little small, and sometimes may not be enough for those with big appetites. Thus, we recommend that you eat a heavy buffet before proceeding to the resort. The recommended menu is their sotanghon.

It also boasts being the first resort to have an infinity pool, or any pool for that matter. Instead of using chlorinated water, they use the water from the beach. This allows guests to get a feel of the beach during intense heat, as well as during low tides which occur late morning to early afternoon.

Entrance fee is P150/person. Even if you are renting a cottage, tent or cabana, you will be charged an entrance fee. Huts for the day are at P700.00. The tent and cabana costs P1,500, while the cottage is P3,500 for 2 people, plus P500 for additional pax. Meals average P90-P120, drinks range from P45 to P75. Boat transfers cost is P150.
