Hotel Gomel

Situated to the north of the old town centre Hotel Gomel is hard to miss - it is a modern high-rise with a large green sign proclaiming 'HOTEL' on its roof - which was fortunate as I'd forgotten to bring a map or note down the address of the place!

I was not intending to spend much time in the hotel, so I had gone for budget - booking via www.abaka.com I found the rates very reasonable - a mere £25 a night. Though the website announced that the hotel was four-star I soon discovered that in life you get what you pay for.

A '60s tower, I dare say this was used to put up visiting Communist cadres. For me I found the hotel uncomfortable and not really fit for purpose. My room on the seventh floor was very hot and stuffy. Moreover there was no way I could see to rectify this. The windows were painted closed. The radiator did not seem to have a regulator on it - which did not matter as the radiator was not on. The room was just hot regardless. The ensuite bathroom had a bathtub with a shower attachment off the taps rather than an actual shower cubicle. Furthermore there was nowhere for the showerhead to be attached, necessitating me having to hold it up over my head with one hand whilst shampooing with the other.

Breakfast was complimentary, but most of the dishes seemed alien to me. Instead of bacon and sausages there were tubs of meatballs and sour cream. I tended to stick just to the cereals, pastries, and scrambled eggs.

There are lots of amenities at the hotel however - bureau de change, a small Internet cafe, a gift shop, a beauty salon, a restaurant that seemed to be constantly full with a Chinese tour party, and an attached casino. Apart from the Internet, which was fairly cheap with a fast connection speed, I did not use any of these extras. I always say that all I want from a hotel while travelling is a comfy bed, a lock on the door, and access to a shower. The bed at Hotel Gomel was comfy, but the room was too stuffy. I had an ensuite shower, but only as a bathtap attachment. The price was good though. Maybe I have just become spoiled recently. For a similar price in Prague I rented an entire apartment with kitchen, lounge and washing machine in the heart of the old town. For £40 I have had very swish rooms in Salzburg and Venice. So in comparison the Hotel Gomel was a big disappointment. Two stars for price, but let down by the heating more than anything else!
