Sofitel 2000

It's a mirage... no, it's actually there. Rising from the edge of Ouagadougou as if transplanted there by a djinn working for a major hotel chain (Accor, in this case), the Sofitel 2000 (opened in 2005) is a multi-story, first-class hotel that would not be out of place anywhere in the world. To find it in Ouagadougou is nothing short of astonishing.

Besides the spacious rooms with their marbled bathrooms (bidet included), electronic in-room safes, satellite TV, minibars, and porches overlooking either the city or the Sahel, the hotel boasts an excellent French/Gabonese restaurant, a decent breakfast buffet, a neat little snack bar for quick sandwiches or drinks, a fancier bar, an internal arcade with gift shops, salon, Internet cafe and... get this... a gourmet chocolate shop. Private villas adjacent to the hotel are also available.

Some of the desk staff speaks decent English, though French will do you better. The menus are in English and French. The hotel operates its own airport shuttle. Everyone who can hangs out in the front lobby, where the entire country passes through.

The coldest water in Ouagadougou is in the Olympic-size swimming pool. There's also a wading pool for the kiddies.
