Sure we once again had a very long drive between game parks on some terrible roads, but arriving here at Amboseli National Park was wonderful.

Our arrival had been delayed by a somewhat minor breakdown of our vehicle. En route, the metal shield that protects the gas tank broke loose, creating a terrible rattle underneath the truck. Our driver stopped to tie it up but the first fix didn't hold, so he had to stop a second time and drive much slower after that stop in order to prevent it from breaking completely off.

In spite of being more than 30 minutes past the lunch serving time, the staff accommodated us, taking orders based on what they had prepared that afternoon on the lunch buffet. I think they could have served us peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and we'd have been OK with that. We were delighted however, with a full four course lunch that started with soup & salad and ended with an assortment of nice desserts. For an entree, they served us beef with spinach mashed potatoes and rice, along with vegetables (more spinach) and dinner rolls. Too much spinach for my tastes, but I did enjoy the beef and rice!

I found the monkeys a bit distracting during our meals and while walking around the property. They even had a Maasai warrior whose job it was to scare away the little annoyances using a slingshot. At one point I tried to chase one of the monkeys away with my own best scary "boo" but the thing stood up on its back legs, bared its teeth at me and made some gesture with its arms; I think the monkey equivalent of giving me the finger.

The views here were lovely with our room facing the plains and the rising sun. On a clear day we would have seen Mt. Kilimanjaro but during our time there, it only made a hazy appearance on our last morning of our two night stay.

I believe that Ol Tukai Lodge had the best food of our entire stay in Africa. The menu selections on the buffet were outstanding, especially the night that they did the grill night out on the yard. One of the lunches included a seafood "chowder" that was really more than what we in America know as a soup like chowder. The chef's creation was shrimp and calamari in a flavorful cream base that I ate over rice. It was really to thick to eat like soup and was delightful.

They also had a very nice and expansive salad bar with many fresh choices. Ending meals here with dessert was an equal delight. No disappointments . . . no chocolate sauce necessary to spruce up your desserts!

Amboseli National Park is known for their large elephant herds and the research conducted there. We were treated to several visits by the herd right along the fence line in front of our cabin. Imagine our surprise to see them mating about 150 yards away!
