For good luck and tradition, my daughter Saskia chooses me, the Mother of the Bride, to spend her last unmarried night with her. As delighted as I am to spend this momentous time with my only daughter, it also doesn’t hurt that Casa Palermo is an ultra-luxurious Mediterranean-style villa of the sort budget-minded me would never overnight in, were it not for this special occasion.

It’s already dark, but the sound of trickling water from the fountain imparts a soothing feeling as we check in. We attempt to tip the young man carrying our luggage upstairs, and to his credit, he reminds us that the $20 "resort fee" already included in the bill is in lieu of gratuities to staff. Saskia’s upstairs estate room is the height of intimate luxury, very welcoming and warm in beiges, golds, and orange-reds similar to the color of her bridesmaids’ dresses. Sweet treats and terrycloth robes are laid out for us on the beds, fresh fruit and orchids are on the table, and an assortment of teas and other beverages are in the cupboards and fridge. Saskia immediately begins making last-minute phone calls, then begins to organize her hand-made menus for the wedding feast.

After returning from driving my mother and son to Park Crest Motel, I find my daughter getting ready to bathe in the opulent sunken tub that serves as a partition between the bedroom and huge three-sink, two-toilet bathroom. Another alcove of the bathroom contains a shower. A bit stressed because two of the personalized menus are nowhere to be found, Saskia is reassured when I tell her I’ll take care of getting authentic-looking copies made the next morning.

Halfway through her bath, though, we begin hearing an escalating argument between a couple in an adjacent suite. When the loud interchange continues for more than 10 minutes, I call the office to complain. Almost immediately, staff members rush over to silence the bickering couple, most tactfully I’m sure. As Saskia crawls into bed, it’s time for me to luxuriate in the steamy tub. I could have fallen asleep right then and there, but after a nice long soak, I dry off and get in bed, too.

Casa Palmero is relatively new. It was built in the mid-1990s surrounding the 1920s-era estate of Pebble Beach’s general manager. It sits in seclusion along first and second fairways of Pebble Beach Golf Links. In the renovated main house, guests can enjoy the luxurious living room, library, billiard room, and private bar, where evening refreshments are complimentary. The 24 surrounding spacious rooms and suites exude elegance. Ground-floor rooms open onto private patios with a whirlpool spa, and second-floor rooms contain oversize cushioned window seats. Lush landscaping, outdoor pool, grand courtyard, and adjoining full-service spa complete this superb resort. Guests of Casa Palmero are allowed to use all Pebble Beach facilities.

Some downstairs rooms are handicapped accessible. Upstairs rooms require climbing stairs.
