Hostal Tijcal I

Hostal Tijcal I

We opted to stay just off the Plaza Mayor at the Hostal Tijcal I located on the third floor of a traditional apartment block and reached by an old fashioned cage elevator or if that is a bit daunting there is also a set stairs.

Boasting a fantastic location just off Plaza Mayor it was perfect for our needs, close to some great cafes, restaurants, and bars including Calle Cucharillas and not too far from the major sights or the Metro Station Sol. Security is good, the front door onto the street is locked at night as well as the entry to the hotel with the Reception being manned 24 hours.

The receptionists that work in the day all speak really good English and numerous other languages and are more than happy to give directions and hand out maps.

The room boasted a small, traditional balcony and was comfortable, furnished in reds and yellows but nothing memorable. Bathrooms were done in a brown marble tile.

Although we had booked some 2 months prior I got the feeling that the rooms were allocated on a first to arrive, best room allocated so as we arrived very late we were given a tiny room just off the reception. Unfortunately I am a really light sleeper so I knew exactly what time everyone in the Hostal came home and believe me in Madrid that is very late!

They were more than happy to move us the next day so up we went some three flights but the peace and quiet was well worth the stairs. You will soon become accustomed to lots of stairs in Spain, so much so we knew after a short time to ask for a on a low floor.

They also operate another hostel a couple of blocks away the Tijcal II and have also just opened a cafe under it. It was opening week when we were there so we went and tried it but service was poor so didn't return but it may have improved since then.

Make sure you know exactly where the Hostal is located as when we arrived off the closest Metro Station it was still a 10 minute walk. When we asked for directions, the standard reply from the six or so people we asked was a puzzled look with the comment "No estoy seguro, pero esta muy cerca" - I am not sure but it is very close". When we met Pablo the gentleman that we hired our car from he also a little difficulty in locating it but was really impressed with the location.
