Maybe I'm just not the average tourist, but the Kololi area seemed so hastily put together that the only people that benefit are the locals (I liken it to the Cancun of Africa). In all, this is not a bad thing -- it's their country. However, one would expect better (even in West Africa) in the proscribed "tourist sector". Bumsters are rampant (more so than anywhere else in the country) making it quite uncomfortable to leave the hotel. The women tourists I saw walking alone or in groups were subject to horrendous treatment by the local men.
Now, on to the hotel. After having a lovely 5 days prior at the Corinthia Atlantic in Banjul, I was excited about seeing the pearl of the country that is Kololi & the Senegambia Hotel. The disappointment was overwhelming. The room was not as advertised, the lights in the bathroom flickered annoyingly (if working at all) & could not be fixed by the staff. The food was average (though 1 meal at the upscale Flamingo Restaurant was good), the bar was not stocked adequately (even by African standards) & the fellow tourists were dreadfully rude to the staff (referring to them as the "little colored ones"). I was the only American at the hotel at the time.
The good parts were the entertainment at night & the Monkey Park a short walk away.
Before I travelled I was wary of Banjul & excited about Kololi. Upon my return my feelings are the exact opposite. I cannot wait to return to Banjul & I could care less to ever see Kololi again.
