The good news is it's the cheapest place ($16USD/night) to stay in Kyoto; the bad news is you pay for what you get.
A good place to acclimatize, as it has Western (bunk beds, pedestal toilet) and Japanese (futon...squatter?) offerings. Friendly staff, and an excellent place to mingle with Japanese tourists. Somewhat far from central Kyoto, but as with everything else in Japan: the subway system is efficient and at first glance confusing, but surprisingly easy to master. It is, however, located near Nijo-jo, Imperial Palace Park (a wonderful place for a picnic or a morning/evening stroll) and is a fantastic starting point for exploring Ginkaku-ji, Honen-in and Sochu-jinja. Also, it has easy access to hikes around Kyoto.
