Cuzco Memories

  • June 3, 2008

The first time I came it was on business so I swore I would come back and experience everything the way it is supposed to. As soon as I arrived in Cusco I had this feeling once again, a feeling already experienced, all this energy, like in Ollantaytambo, where I stood speechless before this huge expression of great architecture and history. It started to rain and it was time to go back to the hotel; I took a hot shower and went downstairs to the hotel bar to unwind and share experiences with other fellow travelers. It’s a trip I recommend to everyone I know!

Great Medical Attention

I wasn’t feeling quite well in Cuzco on my first day because of the altitude. The hotel staff was at all times ready to fulfill all my needs. They helped me acclimatize by giving me oxygen and coca tea, which is the suggested drink when feeling ill due to the altitude. The next morning I felt fine and ready to explore every little corner and discover Cuzco’s magic. Later on I went back to my hotel where I shared my experiences with other holidaymakers over a cup of tea. I can’t wait to go back!

Millenary Hospitality

In Cuzco, tourists are treated as family, and not as foreigners; this is how I felt there. I already knew its streets were incredibly touristy, filled with souvenir stands, typical clothes and artisans’ bags, but imagine my surprise when arriving at the hotel I found a souvenir store inside. I decided to purchase a t-shirt with a phrase that caught my eye: “millenary Peru”. Once I experienced the hotels staff’s warmth, as well as the Cuzqueño’s in general, I realized they synthesize in their essence the syncretism of millenary cultures of these lands; their spirit is indomitable, but warm and kind to foreigners, always trying to make them feel like family.

Hotel Libertador

The Hotel Libertador is part of the Summit Hotel chain and is one of the nicest hotels in Cuzco. The hotel is palatial, with rounded doorways; marble floors; and beautiful, majestic furniture. Staying at the Hotel Libertador has the feel of staying in a castle or palace. It is worth splurging for a night or two at the Hotel Libertador, especially after trekking the Inca Trail or hiking up to Machu Picchu from Aguas Calientes.

The hotel staff is very friendly and attentive and will go out of their way to make your stay pleasant. Immediately upon walking into the hotel, we were greeted by several staff members. While checking in, one of the hotel staff brought us each a cup of tea to sip as we took care of the registration paperwork.

We stayed in a suite overlooking a tastefully decorated courtyard of the hotel. The king-size bed was extremely comfortable and had an intricately carved wooden headboard. Rooms were equipped with a hair dryer, cable TV, and minibar.

The hotel has a Business Center, sauna and Jacuzzi, beautiful lounge/bar area, and a first-class restaurant serving international cuisine.

Official room rates begin at over $300, but the hotel sometimes offers specials where you can get a suite for less than $200. The price includes a delicious buffet breakfast that is served from 4:30 to 9am, early enough so that you can eat breakfast before catching the 6am train to Machu Picchu.

If you are returning to the Hotel Libertador after an overnight trip to Machu Picchu, you can store your luggage at the hotel and they will deliver it to your room when you return. We took advantage of this service and were impressed with how organized the hotel was and how quickly they were able to deliver our luggage to our room.

Take advantage of all the hotel has to offer and relax with a drink in the bar/lounge and have dinner at the hotel's restaurant. It will be an experience that you will always remember.
