Rising Cock Hostel

The Rising Cock is a party hostel in a party town. It feels more like a beach house or a college dorm than a hotel, and it´s excellent, especially for the solo traveler, as it provides a great opportunity to meet lots of people.

I ended up on a foldout bed even though I had a reservation, but the people who work there are so accommodating that I didn´t even care. Maria is a wonderful, mothering woman who carefully arranges her guests in the rooms. There are no numbers, but names. (I stayed in the Red Room.) You´re given a key card which grants access to the room and to the hostel, though after midnight you have to ring the bell so someone can let you in.

Maria also cooks and offers the dishes to the guests. We had soup and cake while I was there.

Her son, Mario, in addition to being unspeakably handsome, is also very friendly and goes out of his way to make sure you´re comfortable.

Some rooms have their own bathrooms, some don´t. Some rooms have single beds, some have double beds. My bed was 22 euros per night, which is a little more than I usually like to spend on a hostel, but this place was so much fun that I would certainly do it again.

There is a patio and a lounge upstairs with free Internet and a wonderful couch. Breakfast is included at the bar across the street. You get eggs, toast and juice for free. For an additional 2,00 euros, you can have pancakes and bacon, as well.

The Rising Cock is close to the beaches and, of course, the bars. Lagos is ultra-touristed, so pretty much everybody speaks English. Indeed, many of the bartenders are originally from Australia, England, or Canada!

Stay here. Have a blast.
