Grand Leoniki is part of the Leoniki Residence complex, outside of Rethymno, Crete. The drive was easy along the National Road. It was easier to find the resort using a map rather than the directions provided by RCI. This resort is not on the beach but located in the town of Platanes, part of the tourist sprawl along the northern coast. We had to park on a street behind the resort. This resort does not have a lot of property. Everything is squeezed into a rather urban space. Our unit was lovely and quite new. The floors were attractive large stones. The marble spiral staircase led upstairs to a large master bedroom, king sized bed and a wooden cathedral ceiling and impressive bath of stone and marble. The counters in the kitchen were marble. The stove and oven were stainless steel and there was a small dishwasher. The living area had a wire and glass table with four upholstered chairs, a daybed which served as a sofa but could convert to a double bed and a Queen Anne chair. There was one TV in the living room and a small terrace overlooking the pool. There was another full bathroom downstairs with a shower, sink and toilet.
A welcome package of Champagne, bread, ham, and eggs was in the fridge and this was complimentary. There are quite a few stairs to climb to the apartment and in the unit... so this would not be a good unit for someone with physical limitations. Our unit was #522. You must use the reception at the Leoniki Residence and this is a little hike. Staff were friendly. Maid service was every day except Sunday and sheets and towels were changed twice during the week. Since it was so late in the season, many restaurants and shops were closing at the end of October. There is a wonderful Cretan restaurant called Taverna Znon about a half a mile down the road from Grand Leoniki. This is where the locals eat. The menu must be 10 pages and you can see all of the food before you order. It is very popular, and extremely reasonably priced. We did not use any of the resort facilities as we felt it a little too cold to swim and while we should have visited the gym to work out... did not!
We had dinner one night at the resort restaurant. It was a buffet for a reasonable €11.50 per person. The food was just OK and I would recommend venturing out and trying the local restaurants. They offered a Greek and a seafood night. Internet access is €5 per hour. We purchased a calling card and used the public phone in front of the resort to call the US. Crete is a huge island and we spent the week exploring. Grand Leoniki is located mid island on the north side.
