Canaltime at Alvecote Marina

Best Things Nearby:
The Pretty Pigs Pub located about 3 miles from the marina offered different meats the carvery every night. You could also order from the menu.

Best Things About the Resort:
Relaxing on deck and watching the duck families after a long day of sight-seeing.

Resort Experience:
Exchanging a timeshare week, for a week on one of the narrow boat's at the Avecote Marina cannot be compared to a normal timeshare exchange. Timeshare units can range in size from studios to condos with several bedrooms, and the furnishings can be very modest or quite posh. Some timeshares are located in remote areas with few facilities, some in hotel-like complexes, and others in resorts that offer many amenities and activities. Canaltime at the Avecote Marina is more like spending a week in a modest camper or RV in a country location with absolutely no facilities or amenities. Other than a parking lot and small office (only open on check-in/out days) there's no-one around, although supposedly you can always reach a staff member by phone. The marina is just that...it is not a place where someone would normally choose to spend more than one night. We knew all of this before we made our exchange so there were no surprises. We wanted someplace to stay while we explored the Midlands area by car and we did not want to be switching hotels every night. We used the boat as our 'botel' and it turned out to be a pleasant experience. It was a great central location and it was nice to have a quite place to relax every night. The inside of the boat is very similar to a camper...a small seating area with benches on both sides separated from the kitchen area by a bar with two stools. Other than making coffee and using the fridge to keep some soft drinks, we didn't do any cooking onboard, but the kitchen was equipped with everything we would need if we had wanted to use it. A hallway ran down one side of the boat and the bathroom, larger than most bathrooms in RV's was on the opposite side. The bed in the bedroom at the front of the boat was very small. The only way to get into the bed was to climb in from the foot. There was a tiny closet, but no space to store suitcases, even under the benches in the sitting area, so we stored the empty suitcases in the trunk of our rented car. If you expect really nice accommodations, amenities such as pools, laundry, etc. canaltime may not be for you. But if you enjoy camping a canalboat exchange may get you closer to the area you'd like to visit. If we go again, we'll plan time to actually take the boat out and explore some of the canals.
