Resort Experience:
I have been fortunate enough to spend a couple of weeks several times a year for the past 2 years on the most incredible island paradise. Gili Trawangan is so difficult to describe as, on one hand, it caters to the young, and those on a budget, with inexpensive food, parties and a real 'beat' and soul that surrounds you. Yet on the other hand it appeals to people with sophisticated interests and a desire to relax, unwind, visit the day spa, maybe play some golf on Lombok, dive the waters, take part in water sports and eat some amazingly fresh sea food and drink a great selection of wines available from the Beach House Deli. And on the topic of The Beach House...What can I say?
It is the most incredible place to spend a few days or weeks. The setting of the bungalows and the five-star villa, nestled into tropical gardens directly across the cobbled road from the water was so pretty and tranquil. The rooms are all air-conditioned and come with TV and DVD player, which kept the kids happy on hot afternoons after a morning of water sports! We are a tall family so really appreciated the firm, king-size beds with the pretty Indonesian ikat covers. All the rooms seemed to have little Indonesian touches, giving them a bit of a traditional feel. The bathrooms are outdoor, finished in river pebble walls and terrazzo basins. Each bungalow has a balcony where we sat and had a cocktail in the evenings before heading to the restaurant.
The restaurant and bar hang over the water directly across from Lombok with breathtaking views. The Beach House owners are all from Australia and England and are really on top of providing super fresh top quality food, and an amazing selection of reasonably priced wines from Australia, France and Chilli (we got to try most of them). Frankly, some days we didn't move from the waterside spot in the restaurant, lying on sun lounges, drinking chilled wine and listening to a great selection of chill-out music.
We also were so happy with the incredibly friendly service of The Beach House staff and management who helped make our stay so enjoyable.
The rooms were so cheap (around $50 per night Australian) that we decided next time we'd go back with three other couples and take the four-bedroom private villa which has its own 10m pool, and is pure luxury and elegance--all for around $300 per night. So figure that out: four king-size bedrooms, each with private bathroom and four sitting areas, kitchen, big screen plasma, individual tellies and DVD players, and an amazing stereo system. Works out to be around $75 a night a couple!
Overall one of the best trips we've had and if you want to mix a little activity (the area is famous for its diving or snorkeling) with a little luxury then this is an absolute must do!
