Great Neighborhood, safe location, clean and wonderful staff!

As a woman traveling alone with an 11 year old and an infant, safety is very important. The hotel was very nice, extremely clean and in a safe neighborhood, with a subway stop just across the street and easy access to the bus lines. You never get a great deal of space in New York hotels and this one was no exception but the bed linens were nice and there were plenty of pillows. The maids came every day and replaced towels and bed linens. I see some of the previous reviews were bad but, for an experienced New York visitor who isn't looking for fancy soaps and shampoos to take home, we couldn't have asked for more. It was a wonderful home base to explore the city, at a reasonable price and in an ideal location. There were markets, drugstores and neighborhood restaurants nearby and all in a very safe residential area. The staff were very nice and always helpful when needed. We asked for a dinner recommendation one night and ended up having one of the top five best meals I have ever had in the city at a little neighborhood chinese place that does mostly take-out...for a grand total of $13 for two entrees, soup, two soft drinks and a bottle of water, we fed three people. Most hotels would send you to an expensive tourist restaurant where you pay more than what you get. I would absolutely recommend this hotel and will most likley stay there again.

Our hotel was not ADA equipped. That is to say, when you entered the front door you had to climb over 50 steps to the front desk. Also, our room was right across from the lounge which continued to have very loud noises until way after midnight -- like 3 a.m. in the morning dispite the many calls to the front desk to report the noise. Since the front desk was right outside the louge area, it should have been stopped after the first call. The following nights we did not experience this noise as we complained to the front desk on Sunday morning. Saturday and Sunday, May 16 &17, 2009 was very cold in N.Y. there was no heat in the room and the window air conditioner was not covered and therefore a draft occured. We did not have an extra blanket for our bed. There was no safety lock on the door of our room. The daytime hotel staff was very friendly and accomodating.

Who Rated this Hotel 4 Star??? Do they ever visit the hotels personally? Where did they get those pictures of this hotel? Nothing looked like that when we were there. This was not a 4-star hotel! There were no elevators and we were on the third floor with lots of luggage to tote up the very narrow stairway. The room was so small, barely enough room to walk around the beds. The room was clean, however, there were no hand wash clothes. When we ask the front desk for some, they brought two wash clothes and said "sorry, that's all we have". The second night, still no wash clothes, when we called to request some, they brought us three hand towels and said "that's all we have". No ice was available except to call the front desk and they were not very happy to assist us, we did get the ice. The hallways and stairwells were very narrow and dark only one way traffic. I will never stay in another Marrakeck Hotel nor will I receommend them to anyone. We would have changed hotels but we had paid in advance through Travelocity. Feeling secure that it was a good place to stay since it was rated a 4-star hotel and the pictures looked so nice. This experience has made us very leary of making reservations and paying in advance to a place we find on the internet and haven't previously visited. Just looking at the pictures and going by the rating of the hotel I guess isn't enough. This really was not a good experience for us and we will probably not use Travelocity anymore.

Don't stay here!

First off, I am not that picky of a person. I wanted to start with that because by the time I am through with this review, you're either going to think that I'm just way too picky or you'll believe me and won't stay here! Here it goes- 1) No heat! (however the staff did deliver a small heater) 2) Heater caused a fuse to blow and all of the electricity went out (staff restored electricity quickly) 3) Floor was slanted causing tables and bed to be slanted. Objects fell of the table as a result. 4) Bed was rock hard-very uncomfortable! 5) Worm-like object underneath the back of the toilet-yuck! 6) Shower's water pressure was so hard that it hurt our skin and sensitive parts-ouch! 7) Shower's water temperature varied constantly. At one point it turned scalding hot causing me to scream aloud. My skin was sore and I probably had a mild burn (similar to a sun burn). 8) Requested an iron and ironing board, and the ironing board that the staff brought had a huge hole in the middle! 9) No elevator (staff is willing to help with baggage) Hotels in New York are expensive. Get over it and book a better hotel than this. You will be glad you did!

The room was clean and the bed was comfortable. The staff were very friendly and gracious. There is a nice place called the Metro Diner across the street for meals anytime. The only problem was it got expensive with all the cab rides into the city. Otherwise I would stay there again!
