Brodies Backpackers

Brodies has come a long way in recent years. With the addition of a second location just across the street, Brodies can now offer not just doubles but doubles with or without en-suite. The cheapest you'll find is a bed for just £8pounds a night. Mind you, that is in a 16-bed dorm and is only on Sunday through Tuesday nights. That same bed goes up to £10 a night on Wednesday through Thursday, and £12 a night on Friday and Saturday.
A private double will cost between £35 and £45 a night. Most other beds all around £12 to £16 per night. They do weekly rates which does give you a discount. I think it's something like the 7th night is free.
The original Brodies is on the second floor above World's End pub. It has four dorm rooms, a shabby looking kitchen, a shabby looking lounge room, two ladies’ toilets, two men's toilets, and four showers.
However, like most backpackers, it wasn't the place, but the people that kept me there for 3 months. Brodies reputation seems to proceed itself and word of mouth gets around, to it seems, some pretty cool people. You need an international passport to stay.
The new addition across the street must be where the photos come from on their website. Everything looks so clean. Having never been to that one I do know the original Brodies pretty well.
The kitchen is pretty small although well equipped. Good luck finding space in the tiny fridge. The lounge room was pretty smokey (there is a fireplace and you are allowed to smoke) but it's also a cozy place to talk and read.
The mattresses aren't the thickest but they aren't too thin either and the duvets come with the bed price and are very warm.
As for location, it's in a great spot. Brodies sits at the end of High street (which is the Royal Mile for those that don't know), just down from North Bridge. Like all places in Edinburgh you are less than a minute’s walk to at least five pubs. You're also a 10-minute walk to the castle, 5- minute walk to Cow gate and 15-minute walk to the grass market.
