The Macdonald Inchyra Hotel

The Macdonald Inchyra Hotel

Situated in an estate bordering the village of Polmont, this hotel provides a convenient base for visiting the award-winning Falkirk Wheel, Linlithgow Palace, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Stirling, or touring the Trossachs and Loch Lomond. On the negative side, being within sight of Grangemouth Oil Refinery doesn’t inspire.

Inchyra Grange mansion house, with its elegant frontage and own chapel, became the Inchyra Grange Hotel in the mid-20th century. Macdonald Hotels took it over 12 years ago. They developed a new accommodation wing, two restaurants, a bar, and a leisure centre. The hotel is now ideal for families, couples, groups, tour parties, business conferences, dinners, and weddings.

The Priory Restaurant, in what was the old stone chapel but now with a conservatory extension, is the hotel’s fine dining room. Just outside this restaurant is the Priory Lounge Bar with comfy sofas and armchairs for pre-dinner drinks, coffee, or a nightcap served at your table. The Steakhouse offers a casual setting with a good pub-style menu and tasty steaks and grills.

The setting is enjoyable with the old honey-coloured stonewalls adding warmth, and a hint of grandeur. A daily fixed-price menu, as well as the extensive á la carte menu offers Scottish cuisine featuring fish, beef, lamb, and game. We found service faultless and usually, but not always, the meals were spot on. A piano player entertains guests on Friday and Saturday nights, though personally I don’t care for live music during meals. Beside the second restaurant, the Steakhouse, there’s a Bar with a big flat screen TV showing sporting events.

Breakfast, served in the main restaurant, is buffet style. However, you can order a full cooked breakfast in your room with a menu, offering a choice of fruit, yoghurt, various eggs, and even smoked haddock. The buffet offers the usual cereals, fruit juice, pastries, and a hot selection. In midsummer I imagine it can be hectic but it was quiet in February.

There are 107 Standard, Executive or Superior Bedrooms redesigned in 2005 in contemporary style. Rooms vary in size, so do discuss your needs with reservations. Ours was a standard room. We had booked a twin-bedded room but received one with a double bed—carelessness? The firm mattress, cool, crisp cotton duvet cover, and pillows ensured a good night’s sleep—helped by the absence of traffic noise. A morning newspaper delivered to the room provided early morning reading

The bathroom offered a lively power shower over a bath, bathrobes, large towels, toiletries, and cotton wool, as well as tissues. Also available: a trouser press, electric razor socket, hairdryer, dressing table, TV, telephone and two armchairs.

The Leisure Centre & Spa includes a kidney-shaped swimming pool, a whirlpool tub, steam room, and sauna. The beauty salon has three treatment rooms, if you fancy a massage or facial. Outdoors there is a floodlit tennis court, and Polmont Golf Course is nearby.

This hotel ranked as a four-star hotel by ‘Visit Scotland’, and is one I can highly recommend
