Travelodge South San Francisco is 4 miles away from SFO International Airport and about a 10-minute walk from the BART South San Francisco station. There is nothing to do here after 9pm, when the closest shopping mall about 2 miles away closes.
The place offers free local calls; free Wi-Fi; a mini fridge; a microwave; a mini coffeemaker; a TV with HBO 1,2,3, CNN, FOX, ESPN, Disney, and the Spanish channel, though some channels didn't come in clear or had video noise; climate control, which heats or cools but has no thermostat control; and a hair dryer. The room lacked a clock-radio, even though it advertises this on their website. The hot and cold water controls of the sink are reversed, a sign of poor quality here. They offer complimentary continental breakfast from 7:30am to 10am, a free USA Today or SF Chronicle newspaper at the office, an ice machine by the small swimming pool, a large parking lot, and rooms on two floors. If you're checking in late, you get an upper-floor room. There is no shuttle service to the airport, no visitors or calls placed to rooms after 10pm.
The room itself is decent, but the beds are too soft and bouncy. I had trouble falling asleep. The bathroom tiles were slippery when wet.
If you're hungry after 9pm, you'd better call out for pizza. This is not in a choice location, there's nothing in the immediate area, except Kaiser hospital and a Costco. This location would make sense with a sick relative or friend at Kaiser and you want to be physically close by. I felt isolated and dismal staying here with no other outside activities or attractions nearby other than the Internet and cable TV with a food source of phone-in pizza, it may not matter for those with a car. I was certainly glad it was only for one night here and leaving. Check-in is 12pm and check-out is 11am. You must provide a photo ID and credit-card info upon check-in.
The Travelodge in Millbrae has a better infrastructure, with a 24-hour cafe close by, a shopping mall or a real walking neighborhood a 10-minute walk away. It's in a choice location, especially if you're on foot. Be aware of the last BART train should you be out past midnight and need to get back.
