This apartment-hotel, just a 5-minute drive from Johannesburg's Jan Smuts International Airport, was one of the best buys we have gotten in a couple decades at least. For a princely sum of US$45, via Expedia, I must admit, we had a bedroom, a kitchenette, large living room, and a huge bath. The beds were comfy, the kitchenette was well-appointed, and the living area was a delight to come back to after a hard day of sightseeing. It was also nice to be able to prepare our own breakfasts in the morning that were precisely to our liking.
In a way, the best thing about the place was the staff. They made sure we had absolutely everything we needed, even arranging for us to change rooms after 10pm because my wife thought the location was too noisy. They were also incredibly helpful to us when we had trouble with a rental car company and happily answered all our detailed questions about how to get from Point A to Point B, which sections of the city we should avoid, and where I could find a rather unusual camera battery that failed to recharge. Just a footnote: The Don Suites chain is the only hotel group that is completely black-owned, managed, and operated.
Other amenities included a small pool (not in use in winter, though!), a small restaurant, and a bar.
