Best Things Nearby:
Everything is at your beck and call at this place. Fishing, snorkeling, pools, playground, tennis, restaurants, dolphin encounters.

Best Things About the Resort:
The lagoon by the hotel pool is great for kids who are "afraid" of what might be in the ocean. It is right next to the dolphins pen, and you can rent tiki boats to paddle around in for 30 minutes. There is a great Kids Camp with pirate pool, lunch, putt putt, with a basketball and volley ball court as well.

Resort Experience:
Don't expect to save money here but you will get a lot of bang for your buck. The staff at the Kids camp is incredible. You are one hour from Key West so you can enjoy the sunset festival on Mallory Square. You are 20 minutes from Islamorada which has the Wide World of Sports store for the avid fisherman, and one hour from Pennekamp state Park. There are great, small independently owned restaurants in Marathon (Annettes). If you like fishing go out with captain Kirk on the baitrunner with first mate Walker, they were fantastic with our kids.

We stayed in a two-bedroom townhouse at the resort. It was well kept, clean, and had a small pool on the back patio. We had a fantastic view of the intracostal and a neighborhood iguana. There are hotel rooms also available and smaller townhouses to fit all price ranges.

Our condo had three TVs, two bedrooms, a DVD and VCR player, two balconies, two and a half baths, and a very equipped kitchen.

You are in a great location; 1 hour north of Key West, 20 minutes from Islamorada, and 1 hour from Key Largo—which has Pennekamp State Park.

I would recommend eating off the resort the service staff get an automatic 15% tip no matter how good or bad they are doing. Annettes in Marathon is awesome, as well as Islamorado Fish House. Big Bunz is good for breakfast up in Key Largo

Your typical beach resort--not the Ritz, but comfortable, spacious, and clean. We had a ground floor room facing the adult pool. We arrived late in the night, and I have to say, opening up the curtains the following morning, it was like Dorothy stepping out into Oz for the first time. Technicolor. The hotel does a fabulous job with groundskeeping.

The resort has several large pools, each with a different theme. The kids played on the "pirate ship" with slides and water cannons. The quite adult pool gave the grown ups a break with poolside beverage service. The saltwater lagoon and the large family pool were big hits.

The resort offers extensive activities that will fill your vacation with adventure and luxury. We enjoyed kayaks for touring around the island. The Scuba Center offered first rate service to a variety of interesting dive sites. Many in our group also enjoyed parasailing and many other activities.

My wife and I enjoyed the tennis courts, which are very well maintained. We were able to walk onto a court whenever we wanted with no additional charges. The kids were happy at the pool while we enjoyed ourselves on the nearby courts.

We signed up for the meal plan that included free breakfast every morning. The extensive buffet satisfied the kids with French toast and pancakes, the hearty eaters with eggs Benedict and the standard breakfast fare, and the selection of fresh fruits and healthy foods kept the diet conscious happy too. I would, however, suggest eating lunch and dinner elsewhere.

The one downside of the resort was the cost. Plan on spending 40% of your room rate per day for expenses on the resort for diving, parasailing, and other activities. If you do not plan for this expense, you will miss out on a lot of the fun. The price tag definitely opened our eyes, but we did feel that we received reasonable value for the money we spent.

In short, the Hawk’s Cay Resort provided a top notch family vacation for a top notch price.

Hawk''s Cay Resort

Hawk''s Cay is a fabulous place - beautiful pool and beaches, its own private lagoon, and large comfy rooms. The bath tubs have gel-filled bottoms that are so comfortable to stand on when you''re in the shower. Beautiful views of the water from every room. There is a wonderful restaurant that serves a huge breakfast buffet. There is also a marina.

Hawk''s Cay also has the Keys only swim with the dolphins program. I did not participate in the program, but you can watch it from the lagoon and the kids looked like they were having a wonderful time. However, it is expensive!

Let me clarify, I was lucky enough to have won a stay at the Hawk''s Cay through an internet contest. I received a regular room for two nights, breakfast for two, and a snorkel excursion. I checked the prices while I was there and could not believe how much it was, especially for food. The food and service were great when you consider we were staying there for free.

If you have the money for this resort, definitely go. It''s wonderful. If you''re a budget traveler like myself, winning a contest may be the only way you will get there. Side note - we were unable to go on the snorkel excursion because of windy weather (we were there only a month after Hurricane Georges and the sea bottom was pretty torn up).
