this is smack middle of the city. not walking distance from any tourist attractions, but close enough to jump on the muni bus and get to union square, bart stations, goldengate park, chinatown, wharf, all within 10-15 minutes on the bus. (5 minutes via car). Hotel was simple and clean. Not mucky mucky like the ritz but it was clean, simple, and good enough to sleep in and have a good time. Neighboorhood is kinda iffy, but still decent, just dont take alleways late at night. Other than that, 5 stars! i'll be back again!

This was a great hotel. We stayed for 5 nights & the only problem we had was a TV that didn't work properly, but it was quickly fixed when I called the front desk. The front desk employees are very friendly & helpful. It was in a great location, with several bus stops close by...very easy to get around the city. The first night we stayed, there was a wine & cheese in the hotel lobby, which was very nice. The free breakfast had a good variety. I thought the room would be very small from reading previous reviews, but it was the perfect size for 2 people.
I think we could have done better

Having never been the SF, I suppose it was ok, but I didn't appreciate having to pay an additional $25 for parking and the breakfast was worth aboug $1.00. We were traveling with 2 kids, so they were very disappointed there was no pool. The room was nice and big and Mel's Diner is delicious, but that's really all the place has going for it. Funny smell, slow elevator, but nice staff--even if they do give wrong info.
Not Bad!

For the money the Opal was a good location. It is in the center of the city and you don't need a car. The locals were very helpful and freindly for transit information and locales. There's a 50's diner connected to the Hotel and the staff was very helpful. There's a pay as you go Internet/Business room and a small fitness area. The continental breakfast is ok (juice, milk, cold cereal, fruit).
The hotel was restored probably 10 years ago. The decor was nice. I'm a light sleeper so I could hear the muffles of conversations from the next room. I recommend white noise for those who are light sleepers too.
Every big city has its challenges and the homeless is one of them. They are NOT dangerous people. They may ask you for change but they are friendly.
My family (wife and two kids 4 and 6) had a good time. The goal was to visit the Redwoods and San Francisco was the first stop. We are coming back next summer and the Opal is part of our package tour.
I give the Opal a 7 out 10 overall!

This was our first time vacationing in San Francisco, and the Opal turned out to be a nice hotel for the price. The hotel is old, but very clean. The staff was very friendly and I loved that their parking lot had assigned numbers along with a gate to get in and out. The continental breakfast was just enough to get us going in the morning. I would definitely recommend this hotel to others.
