The manager was a jerk!

The weekend manager refused to check in my partner who was a listed guest and basically told him to take a hike until I got there. We understand there may exist policy, but there were conflicting statements between the front desk clerk, travel agent and the manager. Worst of all, the manager was rude, not helpful and seemed to take joy in our mishap. I had to leave my business meeting in order to address the issues, thus interrupting the main reason for my trip. Other than the rude manager, the room was clean and pleasant. However, our experience with this jerk has left a sour taste and we would never recommend this hotel to anyone.

This hotel does not deserve 3 stars imho

This hotel is in disrepair, hallways are stuffy/have unpleasant odors. We were assigned a dirty room, had to be changed, plus extra $30/day parking charge not disclosed before we booked. Continental breakfast at an irreducible minimum as far as quality, no other dining except for a Mel's diner next door. Absolutely would not stay here again.

Good service from all staff with whom I had contact. Clean and within walking distance to most major attractions if you like to walk and public transportation in immediate area if you don't. Excellent value overall.

Great price to be in the City

I was looking for a good quality room for around a $* a night in the City San Francisco. The Opal delivered everything as promised. The location is about 6-7 blocks from the BART. We took a cab from the BART to the hotel for arrival, but walked with our luggage (rolling suitcase) back to the BART for the departure trip. The hotel staff was very nice. The room was clean and comfortable. A great value. There is a diner next to the hotel and one across the street (Tommy's Joint). Tommy's Joint came recommended from the cab driver and was good for a homestyle meal and bar drink. Security in the hotel was good at night. Your room key unlocked the lobby door. 15 minute walk to china town or short cab ride. The continental breakfast was plentiful and fresh. This is a small hotel built early 1900's , but things looked fine to me. Some reviews I read talked about the homeless and proximity to Opal hotel. I walked all over SF that weekend, the homeless are everywhere in that city. It seems to be just part of the culture. I strongly recommend this hotel.
