Description: If you are looking for affordable oceanside accommodations in Kailua-Kona, Casa de Emdeko is the place for you. This condominium complex is located just south of downtown Kailua-Kona and is comprised of one- and two-bedroom units. Since the complex is not within walking distance of downtown or a beach that is suitable for swimming, renting a car is advised. That said, Casa de Emdeko is still a great place to stay and has many things to offer its guests.
Vacation rental reservations are typically made via a property management firm or directly through the condo owner. One benefit of using the former method is that a company may represent several units within a complex, and if the unit that you want is unavailable, they can assist you in finding another unit. The unit my family rented was very affordable and cost approximately $130 a night for four people.
The condo unit that we stayed in consisted of two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen, an eating area, and a living room. The unit was clean and was equipped with many useful amenities, including central air conditioning, a washer, a dryer, a TV, and a stereo. The unit also came with a private lanai (balcony) overlooking a well-maintained courtyard full of beautiful flowers, tropical plants, a pool, and a cabana. The lanai was a great place to enjoy breakfast and listen to the birds in the courtyard or relax and watch the ocean.
Casa de Emdeko is not a beachfront property. The portion of property alongside the ocean is mainly pitch-black lava rock (like much of the island’s coast!). For those who want to go for a swim or sunbath, the property has both a salt-water and freshwater pool, as well as a small man-made “beach.” Some of our most memorable moments at Casa de Emdeko were spent along the complex’s seawall. We would go to the seawall to watch the waves collided against the lava rock or to look at the small black crabs that inhabited the rocky shore. On one morning, my husband was fortunate enough to see several dolphins swimming near an anchored cruise ship, and there were several mornings when we really hit the jackpot and saw humpback whales swimming off the coast. This was quite unusual, as it was early April and humpback whales are typically seen in Hawaii between late December and mid-March.
Tips:
*Renting a condo with a kitchen can really help cut down on your meal expenses. You don’t need to cook all the time, but for simple meals, such as breakfast and lunch, having a kitchen is great. For local produce, check out Ali’i Garden Marketplace, which is only a 5- to 10-minute walk from the complex.
*Having a washer and dryer in the unit can help cut back on the amount of clothes you need to pack and is especially handy if you are planning a long vacation.
*Bring your binoculars--you never know what you’ll see!
