Description: If you're used to Best Western hotels in the U.S., you might not realize that, in Europe, they are independently owned and moderately priced, excellent choices often in historical buildings. This charming property is situated in a building that dates back to the 12th century, in the heart of Luzern. With five floors and 57 rooms, the property is just the right size for personalized service.
It's a perfect location, just an easy 10-minute walk from the train station, across the bridge and down to the left along the river. The hotel features a bar-and-breakfast room looking out on the river. In summer, there are outside tables where you can dine along the river, watching the swans swim by. The full breakfast, which is quite plentiful, features choices as omelettes made to order, hard boiled eggs, meats and cheeses, yogurts, muesli, and fruit, as well as bakery goods. This bountiful buffet is included in your room rate. The hotel restaurant is an excellent choice for dinner too.
Hotel rooms have have cable television, a mini-bar, hair dryers, and an iron and ironing board. Bathrooms are spacious. Consider splurging for a balcony room overlooking the river. You'll enjoy great views of mountain peaks, the Chapel Bridge, and the Jesuit church (not to be missed!), which is directly across the river from the hotel.
Staff is friendly and eager to please. Free internet service is available on a stand-up terminal in a corner opposite the reception desk. While it's not a great place to spend a long time, it's perfectly satisfactory to check email messages or make ongoing travel plans.
For a moderately priced, excellent hotel in the heart of Luzern, this can't be beat. Beware, though, this gem isn't a secret. You'll find it often books up months in advance.
