Description: We recently spent two nights at Hotel Kasteel Terworm near Heerlen. For the birthday of my partner I wanted to do something special and since we are both very fond of castles, I was looking for a castle where we could spend the night. Through the internet I found Castle Terworm in Heerlen.
History
Terworm castle dates from the 14th century. In both the 15th, 16th and the 17th century, it extended. Thus comes the entrance to the moat in 1670. Since its construction in the 14th century noble families have lived here. One of the first restoration took place in the 18th century. Around the same time, the garden was laid out in French rococo style. From 1917 to 1988, the Oranje Nassau was owner of the castle and surrounding estate. After the mine closure they wanted to built a amusement park. The population of Heerlen and surrounding area was in rebellion against it. The preservation of this unique part of Limburg in its original form was too important for many inhabitants of Heerlen.
The concept.
As is perhaps already clear from the above is a stay at Kasteel Terworm something special. Or maybe the word "exclusive" more appropriate. In Castle Terworm because you feel a little bit of a Baron or Baroness. That feeling starts at the entrance as you cross the moat goes through the gate to the courtyard. The house has a medieval atmosphere you would expect from such a castle. The reception hall and reinforce this image because it also fitted in a classic style with medieval paintings and thick red carpet.
Rooms.
The exclusive feeling continues in selecting and entering the rooms. No two rooms are the same. Each room has its own name and is also slightly different design. There are, among others, Castle Court, Castle Junior Suite, Suite Baron, Baroness Suite, Suite Gatekeeper, Baron de Luxe and Suite Tower Suite Blanc. We stayed at the Baron Suite. This includes a large (double) canopy bed, two comfortable chairs and a desk (with this one folder with information about the environment). Nice detail is the tower room. Here you can come from the same room through a small opening. In the tower room are small windows that offer stunning views of the surrounding area. Thus, the rococo garden visible from the tower room. There are two seats in the tower room that are stuck to the wall. So you can sit enjoy the view. The room is equipped with a TV and a mini bar. The bathroom is a different story. Because the first thing you notice when entering the bathroom is the great classic sitting-bath on metal feet. In this same room is a large basin that is fully equipped as a hair dryer, soaps, shampoo, face cloth, clothing repair kit (needle and thread) and a hair cap. The bathroom has a walk through to the next room where a toilet and a spacious shower. This shower is even a bench where you can sit while showering.
Restaurant.
The two nights we stayed at Castle Terworm we also dined at the restaurant. The food is a la carte and although the menu is not very extensive, there are a number of exclusive dishes. There is a choice of various fish species. As well as asparagus dishes on the menu. I had the last years my desire for asparagus almost completely lost because the quality of the asparagus from the supermarket in our area was very poor. The asparagus in the Kasteel Terworm served are butter soft and free of the 'threads'. The flesh is soft as butter and sensitively prepared. There is also thought of the vegetarian through a number of delicacies without meat or fish. After dinner there is an opportunity to have a drink on the terrace. At first you drink coffee or some sweet aperitifs served. We had some small pieces of apple pie, and a little petit four small glass peach ice.
Breakfast.
The room we had was with breakfast. Here you must use a buffet provided with various breads and various types of fillings. There is also at breakfast a choice of soft drinks and juices. Coffee at breakfast is included but only the first container. For the second cup of coffee must inevitably be paid directly beside us fell into the category of small annoyances. Finally you pay a relatively high rate for an overnight stay.
Cons.
* As I said, the principle is not much for little at Castle Terworm. You pay for an exclusive getaway, and those genes that are not so much to spend would be better somewhere else for a weekend to leave at home. The prices of rooms range from 120 to 230 euros per night excluding breakfast. With the season approaching, breakfast, I spend 247 euros for a midweek night. The price of Friday on Saturday rose to 282 euros as weekend rate. In that light the breakfast should have been better.
* One of the biggest disadvantages we had was noise from the bar. Because at night was very hot, we slept with the windows open. At least we tried it but the bar was down to 1 o clock in the night loud music played. We were then the next morning before eight hours woken up by a chain saw and a heavy machine the shores of Castle Terworm paved weed. One activity that should have been done later on that day. I had expected that Castle Terworm in a rustic environment was like when I'm free and not so early, and certainly not so awakened. Inquire at the reception which is learned that this noisy Parks Department was hired by the castle itself and not by the municipality. A free drink to compensate is taking very nice but it would have been better if there was previously considered their own guests and those with Parks Department later agreed was related to the noise.
Advantages and Conclusion.
The advantages of Castle Terworm are actually largely already mentioned in this story but I will still take this one straight. The Mansion itself has lots of atmosphere in a beautiful setting. The cuisine is excellent and the service is very good. Who wants to get away can confidently go to Castle Terworm.
