New Market B&B

One thing I love about visiting Philly is getting acquainted with all the different neighborhoods. This time it was Society Hill, and it is a fascinating neighborhood to be situated in. New Market B&B is located on Lombard and only one block away from South Street. We were surrounded by an almost endless array of restaurants, cafes, and pubs to choose from, as well as banks and stores. One of a series of similar brick row houses, New Market is a haven of peace in an active neighborhood.

Norma is the perfect hostess, willing to offer any advice that is required but also letting you have as much or as little space as you desire. She was more than willing to let us drop off our luggage early in the day, and when our plans changed, a simple phone call was all that was necessary to change to a later check in time. Breakfast is also flexible according to our schedule.

Our room was on the second floor up a narrow winding stairway, so large pieces of luggage would have been a bad idea . Our bed is a double with a colorful quilt and four feather pillows. We had a TV with cable, a chair with a lamp for reading, a night stand, dresser, and a small table, as well as a sewing table . The room is equipped with WiFi, which surprised and delighted me. It is a very comfortable room, it more like staying at your grandma's house than staying at a luxury hotel. We had a very pretty fireplace that wasn’t a working one; it had a basket of dry flowers in the hearth.

The bathroom is quite large, with a shower-tub combo. The shower had good pressure and there was a large window that made the shower very bright. If you need a blow dryer, you should bring your own, and there is an electric plug near the vanity. It is a very large vanity counter with lots of room for all your toiletries.

Breakfast our first morning was a hominy souffle served with link sausage. There was coffee and juice served with it, and a bowl of bananas was available. The second morning it was baked eggs and whole-grain bread. Also available was homemade granola.

Norma goes way beyond just hospitality. When she discovered that I had left my cell phone charger in our room, she ran right up to catch us as we were leaving the parking garage to give it to me. This after I had insisted that I had packed everything carefully; obviously that charger jumped out of my backpack in a willful effort to escape.
